Dawood Ibrahim, the fugitive underworld don, may have escaped the clutches of the Indian security establishment permanently.
Sources in the security agencies said the 1993 serial bomb blasts accused stays in Pakistan as Mohammad Iqbal and carries a Mexican passport. If the question of his deportation becomes serious, he would be handed over to Mexico, not India, reports the Mumbai newspaper DNA.
Dawood, now proclaimed a global terrorist, left India in 1993. India did not have sophisticated identification markers such as DNA samples or retina images at that point, said an official. It would be difficult to nail him just on the basis of the police claim that Mohammad Iqbal is Dawood Ibrahim Kaskar, he added. "Apart from his residential address, we do not have much evidence to prove that Dawood is indeed Dawood," said a senior police official.
He cited the underdeveloped forensic technology of the early 90s to point out why it was difficult to nab the don. "Dawood has been changing his looks in order to hide himself from the police. Our claims should be backed with scientific proof," said the official.
Even after the police manage to prove Dawood's identity, it won't be easy to bring him to India. He would be deported Mexico, the official said.
Asked whether India would ever be able to get Dawood and his men, CBI chief Ashwani Kumar told DNA that the onus was on Pakistan.
