New Delhi: A report by Uttar Pradesh government's chief veterinary officer today stated that the meat piece found in Mohammad Akhlaq's refrigerator was mutton and not beef.
50-year-old Akhlaq was beaten to death and his 22-year-old son severely injured earlier in September this year in Dadri, near Noida, by locals after rumours spread in the area about the family storing and consuming beef.
Also the reports from forensic tests had earlier confirmed that the meat found in Akhlaq's fridge was mutton and not beef.
Last week, UP police had filed a chargesheet against 15 people in the September 28 incident.
The chargesheet was based on the statement given by Akhlaq's daughter Shaista, who is also the key witness in the case. One of the suspects named in the chargesheet is a juvenile and will be tried before the Juvenile Justice Board.
Akhlaq's family now stays in Chennai with Mohammad's older son, an Indian Air Force man.
Beef is banned in many states of India because cow is considered a sacred animal in this country.
