Lucknow : An ex-gratia compensation of Rs 10 lakh was today announced by the Uttar Pradesh government to the kin of a 50-year-old man, who was allegedly lynched by a mob following rumours that his family was involved in the slaughter of a cow in Dadri area of Gautam Buddha Nagar district.

Chief Minister Akhilseh Yadav has also instructed the District Magistrate and Senior Superintendent of Police, Noida to provide full protection to the family of the victim.

"Chief Minister has announced Rs 10 lakh ex-gratia to the kin of the deceased in the Dadri mob lynch. UP Government will bear all the medical expenses of the other victim in the incident," an official spokesman said here.

"Chief Medical Officer, Noida has been asked to personally ensure best care for the victim," he said.

The man, Mohammad Akhlaq, was beaten to death and his 22-year-old son was seriously injured for allegedly eating and storing beef.

According to police, the incident took place at around 10 pm after an announcement about the same was made at a local temple.

Police said they have collected the samples of meat from victim's family and sent it to the forensics department for examination.

The rumours began when a calf was reported missing in the village, police said.

Sajida, Akhlaq's daughter, however, said that the family had mutton in the fridge and not beef.

Gautam Budh Nagar District Magistrate NP Singh said that police have been deployed in the village and situation is under control now.

“Some locals spread rumours that Akhlaq had cow meat at his home and engaged in cow-slaughtering. Following the rumours, tension ignited and some locals attacked his home in Bisara village,” Singh said.

He said that so far the police have arrested 6 persons in connection with the case.

Beef is banned in many states of India because cow is considered a sacred animal in this country.
