Srinagar: Curfew-like restrictions were imposed today in seven police station areas of the city ahead of a rally planned by Hurriyat Conference.
“Restrictions under Section 144 CrPC have been imposed as a precautionary measure in seven police station areas of the city,” police said.
The police station areas where restrictions have been imposed are Khanyar, Nowhatta, Safakadal, Rainawari, M R Gunj, Kralkhud and Zadibal, he said.
Moderate Hurriyat Conference had planned a gathering at the Eidgah martyrs' graveyard to commemorate the death anniversary of its two slain leaders—Mirqaiz Mohammad Farooq and Abdul Gani Lone.
Farooq, father of Hurriyat chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, was gunned down by militants inside his home on this day in 1990 while Lone fell to bullets of ultras during a commemoration function of the late Mirwaiz at Eidgah in 2002.
Elsewhere in the valley, normal life was affected due to a strike called by the separatists for paying tributes to the slain leaders.
Schools, shops, business establishments and private offices remained closed due to the strike call. The attendance in government offices was also thin, officials said.
While public transport was off the roads, some private vehicles could be seen plying the roads where restrictions were not imposed, they said.
