Srinagar, Nov 28: Curfew was imposed in areas under nine police stations of the capital city Wednesday evening after some skirmishes between two communities in Zadibal area, police said.

A police spokesperson said in a statement: "The district magistrate Srinagar has imposed curfew in police station areas of Nowhatta, M.R. Gunj, Safakadal, Khanyar, Rainawari, Nigeen, Lalbazar, Zadibal and Parimpora with immediate effect, till further orders."

He added that police have taken "cognizance of some skirmishes between two communities in Zadibal area".

"Civil and police authorities are monitoring the situation. There are no reports of anybody getting injured. Sporadic incidents of stone pelting have been reported."

A police officer said the decision to impose curfew in the capital city was taken following clashes between Shias and Sunnis in the old city Wednesday afternoon.

Contingents of police and paramilitary forces have been rushed to the areas to maintain law and order.
