Srinagar: Curfew was on Friday imposed in Handwara, Baramulla, Ganderbal and some areas here ahead of a march by separatists to protest the death of two persons in alleged firing by security forces last week.
Restrictions were in place in almost all other parts of the Valley, police said. Curfew was clamped in Handwara and Baramulla in north Kashmir, Ganderbal in the outskirts of the city and three police station areas here, they said.
The movement of people has been restricted following a "Batmaloo Chalo" call given by hardline Hurriyat Conference led by Syed Ali Shah Geelani to condole the death of two people, including a 25-year-old woman, who fell victim to a stray bullet fired in the air to disperse a mob last Tuesday.
Heavy deployment of forces was seen in Batmaloo area of the city ahead of the march.
Four persons were injured yesterday in Pampore, 16 km from here, in Pulwama yesterday when police fired teargas shells and resorted to lathicharge to chase away agitators, who had blocked the national highway at Kadabal to protest the arrest of a local youth and demanding his release, officials said.
Incidents of stone pelting were also reported yesterday from nearly a dozen places in the city including Tengpora, Batmaloo, Safakadal, Habbakadal, Soura, Bemina, Eidgah, Sakidafar, Rambagh and Noorbagh.
The Jammu and Kashmir Government has appealed to the people to maintain peace in the Valley and said restrictions may have to be imposed at certain places keeping in mind the law and order situation.
Kashmir Valley has seen protests since June 11 when a teenaged boy died allegedly in teargas shelling by police in downtown Srinagar.
The subsequent protests led to the killing of 14 persons, prompting the authorities to clamp curfew in entire Valley on July six. However, curfew was lifted after a week but strict restrictions were placed on the movement of the people in some parts of the Valley. PTI
