Kolkata: A Kolkata court today sentenced three men to 10 years in jail, besides imposing a fine of Rs 1 lakh each in for the rape of a 37-year-old woman inside a moving car in the posh Park Street area three years ago.

On Thursday, the Sessions court had found all accused Sumit Bajaj, Ruman Khan and Naseer Khan guilty of the crime. The woman, Suzette Jordan, succumbed to multi-organ failure in March this year after a prolonged battle for justice.

Ruman Khan and Naser Khan were given additional six months' imprisonment and Rs 35,000 fines. Judge Chiranjib Bhattacharya said if the three convicts failed to pay the fine, six more months will be added to their terms.The judge heard the lawyers of the victim and the accused before delivering the quantum of punishment.

Jordan was raped by five men on the night of February 6, 2012, after they befriended her at a night club on Park Street. Two others, including prime accused Kader Khan, are yet to be arrested.

Chief minister Mamata Banerjee raked up quite a controversy after she described the incident as “staged” and “designed to malign” her government. She had stormed to power barely a year ago.

Investigations into the case were led by former Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Damayanti Sen investigated the case and apprehended three of the accused. 

The trial went on in camera for more than two years and as many as 45 witnesses were examined. 

Jordan revealed her identity in 2013 by marching on the streets of the city to protest against a series of rapes and murders in West Bengal.
