Kolkata, Apr 21: A city court today directed framing of charges of abetment to suicide against industrialist Ashok Todi and three others in connection with the suicide of computer graphics teacher Rizwanur Rahman who was found dead days after marrying his daughter Priyanka.

Ninth fast track court judge Amit Chattopadhyay directed that Todi, his brother Pradip Todi, brother-in-law Anil Saraogi and Pappu be tried under Section 306 (abetment to suicide), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 120B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code.

The court also directed that IPS officer Ajay Kumar, who was the then deputy commissioner (detective department) of Kolkata Police, and two officers - sub-inspector Krishnendu Das and ACP Sukanti Chakraborty of the department - be tried under Section 506 and 120B.

The judge directed that the trial commence from May 16. The case is being investigated by the CBI on a Calcutta High Court order.

Rizwanur, who came from a modest family at Park Circus area in the city's eastern part, had married Ashok Todi's daughter Priyanka under the Special Marriage Act on August 18, 2007.

The couple had reportedly notified the local police station about their marriage.

It was alleged that officers of the detective department, at the behest of the Todi's, had summoned Rizwanur to the Lalbazar police headquarters and intimidated him in sending his wife back to her father's mansion at upmarket Salt Lake city.

It was alleged that Mohiuddin alias Pappu, who was known to Rizwanur and his family, had acted as a link with the Todi's and the police.

It was claimed that though it was promised that Priyanka would be sent back to Rizwanur after a week, she never came back.

On September 21, 2007, Rizwanur's body was found beside railway tracks at Dumdum Patipukur, a few kilometres away from Todi's residence.

Rizwanur's mother Kishwar Jahan and elder brother Rukbanur Rahman had moved the Calcutta High Court seeking a CBI probe expressing that they did not have faith in a state agency as the city police was part of the accused.PTI
