Thrissur: A Kerala court today sentenced Kerala's beedi baron Mohammed Nisham to imprisonment for life along with a fine of Rs 80.30 lakh. He was yesterday convicted for killing his security guard by ramming his luxury Hummer over him.
He has been handed a sentence of life imprisonment in addition to 24 years in jail. "He is likely to behind bars for 39 years," Special Public Prosecutor (SPP) C P Udayabhanu said.
Nisham, 40, was yesterday held guilty by First Additional District and Sessions Judge KP Sudheer.
The judge also stated that Jamanthi, wife of the deceased guard Chandrabose, will be paid Rs 50 lakh from the fine amount.
Pronouncing the quantum of sentence, the court also directed to file a case against Nisham's wife Amal who was an eye-witness of the brutal incident but later turned hostile in the case.
“Nisham will have to undergo life imprisonment under IPC section 302 (murder) and an additional 24 years under various sections of the IPC, including 326 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons or means), and 427 (committing mischief),” said SPP Udayabhanu.
However, Chandrabose's mother and wife have expressed disappointment with the verdict. The prosecution had demanded death sentence for Nisham and a compensation of Rs 5 crore for the deceased guard's family.
"We did not get the justice we expected. Nisham will be happy in jail no matter how many years he is behind bars," Janmanthi said.
Nisham, in a fit of rage, assaulted Chandrabose for a delay in opening the main gate of his residential complex and later rammed his luxury car over him on January 29, 2015.
The severely injured guard, treated in a hospital with ventilator support, succumbed to his injuries in February.
