Varanasi: Congress' Ajay Rai, who is fighting Lok Sabha polls against BJP's Narendra Modi here, on Thursday disclosed nine pending criminal cases against him in different courts, including two under the Gangster Act.
These are the cases where 42-year Rai has been made an accused and the courts have taken cognisance of the matter. However, there are no cases where Rai has been convicted by a court, according to the election affidavit filed by the Congress leader for Lok Sabha elections.
In the affidavit, Rai has also declared total assets worth about Rs 42 lakh in his name and about Rs 30 lakh in his wife's name, taking the total to about Rs 72.25 lakh.
Earlier, the local strongman had disclosed eight criminal cases where he is an accused, while filing nomination for UP assembly election from neighbouring Pindra in 2012. At that time, he had also declared total assets of about Rs 84 lakh.
Earlier for 2009 Lok Sabha elections, he had disclosed four cases against him and total assets of about Rs 55 lakh. For assembly by election in 2007, he declared total assets of Rs 59 lakh and four cases against him but there was no conviction.
The pending cases listed by him in the latest affidavit include one 1995 case in Special Gangster Act Court in nearby Chandauli and another 2010 case before the Special Gangster Act Court in Varanasi itself. Other cases are related to matters between 2008-2011 mostly under different sections of Indian Penal Code.
These cases are under sections 147, 148, 149, 307, 323, 435, 452, 427, 102 and 120 of IPC among others.
The cases pertain to charges related to attempt to murder, intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace, criminal intimidation, rioting, rioting armed with deadly weapon, voluntarily causing hurt, mischief causing damage, and house trespass after preparation for hurt, assault or wrongful restraint.
According to the latest affidavit, Rai had total income of Rs 3.38 lakh during the last fiscal, while his wife had earned about Rs 8.7 lakh.
Rai has total cash in hand of Rs two lakh, his wife Rs one lakh and daughter has Rs 5,000.
His movable assets are worth over Rs 5.7 lakh and that of his wife are Rs 5.5 lakh. The immovable assets worth Rs 36 lakh have been disclosed in his name and Rs 25 lakh in wife's name.
Rai said he does not have a social media account, while he has also declared a Tata Safari vehicle purchased in 1998. He has also declared one diamond ring and one panna ring both worth about Rs 1.85 lakh, while his wife has disclosed gold worth Rs three lakh.
Among others, Rai has invested in one LIC policy and also has some bank deposits. Other assets include agricultural land and residential home.
