New Delhi, Oct 11: Congress today remained ambivalent on questions whether senior party leader Digvijay Singh's open letter to Anna Hazare faulting the Gandhian for not raising his voice against the BJP constituted the official view of the party.
“Digvijay Singh is Congress general secretary, and he has written the letter in his wisdom. It will be better if (we react) only if there is a response and he makes it public,” party spokesman Manish Tewari told reporters.
Singh has written the letter on his personal letterhead bearing his Bhopal address.
Tewari spoke in similar vein when asked whether the four-page letter in which Singh has cautioned Hazare against “lofty promises” by BJP of making him a Presidential candidate, was his personal view.
“I do not want to respond to any further queries on the issue,” he said when asked whether the letter by Singh, a vocal critic of Team Anna, was being treated by the Congress like a “non-paper” in diplomatic terms.
With Team Anna campaigning against his party in Hisar by-poll, Singh dashed off the letter to Hazare asking why he was “silent” on the issue of corruption when the BJP-led NDA was in power.
“What is being seen now is that you have been strongly opposing the Congress and as against this you have been praising BJP's Narendra Modi despite the fact that there is no Lokayukta in Gujarat for the past nine years,” Singh said in his letter written just two days ahead of the by-poll.
Replying to a query, Tewari questioned whether corruption was really the focus of the Team Anna campaign in Hisar or the reference point was “anti-Congressism”. PTI
