Mumbai: In controversial comments, Samajwadi Party leader Abu Asim Azmi has said that Muslims who do not vote for his party are not "true Muslims".
Agencies reported that at an election rally in support of SP candidate Bhalchandra Yadav at Khalilabad, Azmi said that Muslims who do not vote for his party are not "true Muslims".
"A Muslim who does not vote for SP and talks against it is not a Muslim. His DNA test should be conducted. See whether he is from RSS," he said.
The SP leader further said, "I want to say that he cannot be a true person. What has SP supremo Mulayam Singh not done for them (Muslim community)?"
Azmi later clarified that the BJP often puts Muslims with caps and in burkhas in the front at their election rallies.
"Muslims are secular and have always accepted Hindus as their leaders from Jawaharlal Nehru down to Mulayam Singh Yadav. The BJP's slogan is Hindu-Hindu bhai-bhai. It is spreading poison. Even after the Gujarat riots if the BJP claims Muslims support them, their DNA needs to be checked."
On April 11, Azmi had hit the hornets' nest when he said that women who have sex should be hanged.
Azmi said, "...Any woman if, whether married or unmarried, goes along with a man, with or without her consent, should be hanged. Both should be hanged."
