Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee's decisions of not increasing the fares and introducing several safety measures have been well received in the national capital by the masses and the rich alike. The New Delhi Railway station saw passengers keenly talking about the railway budget and welcoming no hikes in fares.
"Mamataji has done a right thing by not increasing the fares. People like me who come to Delhi to work as daily wage labourers or rickshaw pullers had sigh of relief after the announcement was made," said Raman Kant, a rickshaw puller from Bihar.
People in the middle income group also hailed this decision but said infrastructure needed to be upgraded at many railway stations in the country. "The toilets at stations and in trains are dirty. There are nowhere to sit at platforms. These should have been done by minimal increase in fares," said Surendra Mehta, who runs a stall outside the station. 60-year-old Ranjit Juneja gave credit to Banerjee for keeping focus on security aspect and introducing 'Bharat Thirth' train. "It is a wonderful idea," he said. PTI
