New Delhi: In a move that can trigger fresh controversy, the HRD ministry is reportedly considering a proposal to hold a common entrance examination for admissions to all the 42 Central Universities from the next academic session.
Under this proposal, admission to any under graduate and post-graduate courses in all 42 Central Universities across the country will be done through a single window, common entrance examination along the lines of the one conducted for IITs and IIMs.
The objective behind this move is to create a common pool of students and employees from across India. The academic and non-academic staff will also be transferable to any of the universities.
For taking admission in any of these courses, students will be able to apply for 42 central universities located across the country through one form.
Delhi has five central universities including Delhi University, Jamil Millia Islamia, Jawaharlal Nehru University, Indira Gandhi National Open University and South Asian University.
For the last two academic sessions, 10 Central Universities namely Bihar, Jharkhand, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Jammu and others have been conducting a common test on the basis of “Central Universities Common Entrance Test” (CUCET). Under the new proposal, the students will also have the choice to apply for multiple universities and courses to secure admission.
Common entrance test is also a step towards Common University Act. Currently central universities are being governed by their own Act. The ministry has also initiated the process of creating a Common Act for Central University. The ministry hopes will bring parity in the university system and will also inter university transfer and postings of teachers.
The Common Act will also be defeat the unique objective of establishing the universities. The act will surely bring a ray of hope for all the students as it will provide a equal platform for students to get admission to any of the 42 Central Universities.
