Raigarh, Apr 2:  Jindal Power Ltd (JPL) was on Monday issued summons by the district court here for alleged violation of environmental norms in connection with its coal washery at Libara and Dhaurabhatha villages in Chhattisgarh.

Chief Judicial Magistrate Raigarh GK Neelam issued the summons to JPL, its Executive Vice President Ram Niwas and Assistant Vice President Sameer Chatterjee, seeking their presence in the court on April 25.

The summons were issued after the CJM Court registered a case against JPL and its executives under various sections of the Environment Conservation Act, 1986, and Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1976 and Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1981.

The company did not respond to repeated queries on its future course of action in relation to the case.

Earlier, Chhattisgarh Environment Conservation Circle Regional Forest Officer John Lakra had filed a case against the company under the Indian Penal Code.

The charges against the private firm included initiation of work at the 800 tonne/hour (TPH) coal washery at Libara and Dhaurabhatha without environmental clearances, Environmental Department counsel O P Beriwal said.
