Chennai: In one of the most daring rescue operations in flood ravaged Chennai, an Indian Air Force chopper safely airlifted a nine-month pregnant woman from worst rain-affected area of the city who later delivered twin girls.
S Rajeshwari, 28, was taken to nearby Ramachandra hospital after IAF's Cheetah helicopter rescued her on December 3 from the flood hit area Ramapuram.
The operation was quite risky as the area has tall buildings and is densely populated. The helicopter was stationed around eight feet above the roof when she was lifted up.
The Indian Air Force which played a stellar role during the entire rescue operations had saved three or four other expecting mothers.
"Rescuing is a tough job and when I heard our boys (pilots) are airlifting seven and nine-month pregnant women, I asked my colleagues, how are they doing it," a top IAF official said.
