Telugu Desam Party (TDP) President N Chandrababu Naidu on Thursday strongly denounced the "unilateral decision" of the Congress to initiate process for carving out Telangana from Andhra Pradesh.

Speaking to reporters in Hyderabad soon after 28 of his party MLAs submitted their resignation in protest against the Congress move, Naidu held Sonia Gandhi and the Congress party "responsible" for the events taking place in the state following the Centre's announcement.

"The Congress has not taken the people, who are the main stakeholders apart from the political parties, into confidence before announcing its decision on Telangana. The Congress bungled up the whole issue as a result of which Andhra Pradesh lost its prestige and honour in the country," Chandrababu said.

He charged that the Congress proposed to move a resolution on Telangana in the state assembly without following due procedures and guidelines.  "There was not even a proper discussion with the stakeholders on the issue as the Congress seemed to have made it a non-serious issue. It has hurt the sentiments of the people and created panic among them. The Congress did not take any care while dealing with a sentimental and sensitive issue," he alleged.

The TDP president said any resolution on Telangana should be based on a consensus. He termed the resignation of the MLAs as a panic reaction as they feared they could not face the people in their respective constituencies. PTI
