Tamil Nadu government on Friday in Chennai said calls were made to Britain and Sri Lanka from the mobile phone recovered from Nalini, serving life term in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, even as she alleged harassment by jail officials and described the prison as a 'graveyard'.

The phone recovered from Nalini in the prison cell during a routine check on April 20 was activated in March 2009 and registered in the name of one Ravi from Katpadi near Vellore, Law Minister Duraimurugan told the assembly.

Duraimurugan said eight calls had been made to Britain, one to Sri Lanka, five to Chennai, including one to her advocate and 22 to other numbers across the state.

Besides, SMSes were also received and sent, he said, adding the Q branch, which deals with extremist activities in Tamil Nadu, was investigating the matter.

More than 15 SMSes were received and sent and 10 missed calls and eight calls recorded, he said.

However, Nalini, who is lodged in Vellore Women's special prison for the past 13 years, alleged harassment by jail officials and claimed that systematic attempts were being made by authorities to turn away her visitors including lawyers.

In a letter to the Director General (Prisons), she claimed that she had been a stickler of prison rules and protocol, and never bribed officials to get any work done, "which has resulted in problems". PTI
