Kolkata: Bus operators today said they would not defer or cancel the three-day strike called from June 25 till the West Bengal government declared an increase in fares.

“We have requested the state transport department to make their stand clear on this. Till they declare that fares will be increased, we will not cancel our strike,” Dipak Sarkar, Vice-President of the Bengal Bus Syndicate, told PTI here after a meeting of bus operators.

The state government was talking about setting up a committee for deciding the fare increase, which was a lengthy process, he said.

“We cannot wait any more. Although the price of diesel was hiked by the Centre several times, bus fares were not increased by the state government in tune with it,” he said.

Sarkar said apart from the Joint Council of Bus Syndicate, the Bengal Bus Syndicate, All Bengal Bus and Mini Bus Coordination Committee, North Bengal Bus Operator's Coordination Committee and Minibus Operators' Coordination Committee would take part in the strike.
