Her actual name is Suparna Chaudhury . She was born in Madhepura, Bihar.She belongs to a family of doctors.
She pursued her initial education at St. Helen's Convent, Kurseong and La Martiniere School, Kolkata. She then graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) (Honours) from Lady Shri Ram College, University of Delhi and pursued her post-graduation from the University of Delhi.
Shoma started her career with Doordarshan, directing more than 40 weekly television shows on books and writers.
She was associated with India Today and Outlook news magazine. Since then, Chaudhury has been Director of Special Projects and Features Editor at Tehelka. She was appointed Managing Editor of the weekly.
