    West Bengal: 18-year-old student dies while getting down from running train

    An 18-year-old student died while getting down from a running train at Deulti station in West Bengal's Howrah district, police said on Wednesday. The accident happened on Tuesday when the girl, identified as Srabanti Ghosh, tried to get down from a galloping local train while returning home. She knew that the train would not stop at the station, so she jumped out of the running train, and injured herself, they said.

    Two held for snatching mobile phone while riding in rickshaw

    Two men have been arrested here for allegedly snatching a mobile phone from a pedestrian in suburban Andheri, police said on Wednesday. The duo used an auto rickshaw to commit the crime and their motive was to get money for liquor and drugs, said an official of MIDC police station.

    ED seizes Rs 5.25 lakh cash, around 6 lakh bank deposits after raiding postal dept official in Bengal

    The Enforcement Directorate has seized Rs 5.25 lakh cash from the house of a sub-postmaster in West Bengal who allegedly siphoned off more than Rs 4 crore worth of funds of depositors by forging their signatures. The federal probe agency said in a statement on Wednesday that it carried out searches against the official, Lakshman Hembram, on Tuesday and seized "incriminating" documents.

    2 terrorists killed as army foils infiltration bid along LoC in J-K's Poonch

    Two terrorists were killed in a fierce gunfight with army soldiers on Wednesday as the troops foiled an infiltration attempt along the Line of Control (LoC) in the Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir, a defence spokesman said. While the body of one terrorist has been recovered along with war-like stores, a search operation for the body of the second is underway, Jammu-based defence PRO Lt Col Suneel Bartwal said.

    DCGI issues advisory as US-based Abbott recalls batches of Digene gel

    The DCGI has cautioned against the consumption of Abbott's antacid Digene gel citing safety concerns, even as the US-based drugmaker recalled several batches of the medicine manufactured at its Goa facility. According to a letter by the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI), it was reported on August 9 that a bottle of Digene Gel (mint flavour), batch no 51030307, used by customers was of regular taste (sweet) and light pink in colour whereas another bottle of the same batch was of white colour with bitter taste and pungent odour as per a complaint.

    Five irrigation officials among nine chargesheeted for encroaching govt land in Jammu

    Crime branch of Jammu and Kashmir Police on Wednesday filed a chargesheet against nine persons, including five former officials of the irrigation department, for alleged encroaching of a piece of state land here, and constructing a building and setting up a petrol pump on it. The Economic Offences Wing of Crime Branch Jammu filed the chargesheet in a court under various sections of the Ranbir Penal Code and Prevention of Corruption Act, a spokesperson of the agency said.

    3 people killed, 2 injured as car collides with truck on Mumbai-Ahmedabad highway

    Three persons were killed and two others injured when their car jumped a road divider and collided with a truck on Mumbai-Ahmedabad highway in Maharashtra's Palghar district today morning, police said. The car with five occupants was heading from Mumbai towards Ahmedabad in Gujarat when the accident took place near Sativali village at around 6.30 am, said senior police inspector Jairam Ranavare from Valiv police station. The car jumped the road divider, went into a lane on the other side and collided head-on with a truck coming from the opposite direction, he said.

    SC set aside notification for Ladakh hill council polls, orders fresh process in seven days

    The Supreme Court on Wednesday set aside the August 5 notification of the election department for the Ladakh hill council polls and directed the issuance of a fresh notification within seven days for it. A bench comprising Justices Vikram Nath and Ahsanuddin Amanullah also dismissed the plea by the Ladakh administration opposing the allotment of 'plough' symbol to the National Conference and imposed a cost of Rs 1 lakh on it.
