In a major development, the CBI has arrested former principal Sandip Ghosh and a Station House Officer (SHO) in connection with a rape and murder case in Kolkata.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was kept waiting by striking junior doctors as they demanded a videographer be present at the meeting. The doctors, protesting for better working conditions, refused to meet without the assurance of a recorded session. Despite her request, the meeting did not proceed.

Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar along with his wife Sudesh Dhankhar offered prayers at Lalbaugcha Raja in Mumbai.

Amid the ongoing investigation into the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital rape and murder case, the victim's mother said, "We want the CM to accept the 5-point demands of junior doctors and find a solution. I see that the administration, police administration, health department all are at fault. The junior doctors are suffering a lot, we want a solution as soon as possible by talking to them and accepting their demands."

Ahead of their meeting with West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, agitating junior doctors said, they would press for their five key demands in front of the TMC supremo. Significantly, the junior doctors have been advocating for five key demands, which they claim are essential for improving their working conditions and ensuring better healthcare services in the state.  

On Delhi Police filing an FIR in connection with the bursting of firecrackers outside CM Arvind Kejriwal's residence, Delhi BJP President Virendraa Sachdeva said, "The leaders of AAP make announcements whenever there is Diwali or any other festival of Hindu religion. Delhi Minister and AAP leader Gopal Rai should take cognizance of the matter. A day before yesterday, he gave statements about banning firecrackers by February 2025. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Jharkhand, Gujarat and Odisha from September 15 to 17 during which he will lay the foundation stone and inaugurate various projects worth more than Rs 12,460 crore. Agitating junior doctors continued their sit-in demonstration outside the state health department headquarters in Salt Lake for the fifth consecutive day on Saturday demanding justice for the medic raped and murdered at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, even as incessant rain lashed the city. They, however, said they are looking forward to talks with a competent authority to resolve the ongoing impasse.

Thirteen persons suffered from suffocation after a fire broke on the ground floor of a seven-storey building in Mumbai's Ghatkopar area in the wee hours of Saturday, an official said. The blaze erupted at 1.35 am in Shanti Sagar Building located in Ramabai Colony of Pantnagar in Ghatkopar east and around 90 residents were rescued from there, the fire brigade official said.

Police have arrested a 38-year-old man from Virar in Maharashtra's Palghar district for allegedly stabbing his wife to death following an argument with her, officials said on Saturday.

The Assam cabinet decided to amend the standard operating procedure (SOP) for the withdrawal of petty and minor cases in subordinate courts to allow time for serious offences, and decongest jails by releasing undertrial prisoners. This will lead to the withdrawal of 81,000 petty and minor cases till March 2024, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said after the cabinet meeting on Friday.

Congress MLA from Alwar's Ramgarh seat Zubair Khan died on Saturday morning in Alwar. He was sick for sometime. Khan's wife Safia Zubair informed that he breathed his last at 5.50 am today. Former chief minister Ashok Gehlot and others expressed condolence on Khan's demise.

A juice vendor was arrested and his 15-year-old boy was detained over allegedly serving fruit juices mixed with urine to customers, police said. According to a police officer, the arrest was made following complaints by the public that the juice seller has been serving fruit juice to the customers after mixing human urine in it.
