The historic Bali Jatra got off to a colorful start in Odisha's Cuttack on Monday evening. Finance Minister Bikram Keshari Arukha, in the presence of local MPs and MLAs, inaugurated the eight-day festival at Gadagadia Ghat on the bank of the Mahanadi river, adjacent to the 10th-century Barabati Fort ruins.

A day after a woman's body was found stuffed in a plastic bag in east Delhi's Vishwas Nagar area, a 19-year-old youth has been arrested from Mumbai for her alleged murder, police said on Monday. The accused, Sultan, and the 23-year-old victim, Shama, were planning to get married, they added.

Devotees from all over the country took a dip in the Ganga here on Monday on the occasion of Kartik Purnima. It is said bathing in the Ganga on this day brings divine blessings, health, happiness and prosperity, astrologer Prateek Mishrapuri said. "Taking a bath in the Ganga at Har Ki Pairi on Kartik Purnima is considered as sacred as bathing in the holy river during Kumbh," he said. About 18 lakh devotees from all over the country took a bath in the holy river at Har ki Pairi and other ghats, the district administration said.

Delhi and neighbouring regions received a sudden burst of rainfall which further brought down the temperature on Monday. This comes after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted light to moderate rainfall in Delhi and Haryana. Six teenagers go on trial Monday in Paris for their alleged roles in the beheading of a teacher who showed caricatures of the prophet of Islam to his class, a killing that led authorities to reaffirm France's cherished rights of expression and secularism. Samuel Paty, a history and geography teacher, was killed on Oct 16, 2020, near his school in a northwest Paris suburb by an 18-year-old of Chechen origin who had become radicalised. The attacker was in turn shot dead by police.

The Delhi Police has nabbed two alleged criminals following a brief shootout at a flyover in east Delhi's Mayur Vihar Phase 1, officials said. "We have nabbed two criminals following a brief shootout after they opened fire on the police team. One of the nabbed criminals received a bullet injury on his leg, and was rushed to hospital for treatment," said a police officer.

A fire broke in a ground-plus-21-floor residential building near Agripada police station in Mumbai on Monday morning, a fire official said. No one was reported injured in the incident, he said, adding that maximum people were rescued safely through staircases from various floors. The fire broke out at 8.07 am in the building located on Jahangir Boman Behram Marg, near Agripada police station in Mumbai Central area, the official said.

Suspected Naxalites set afire at least 14 vehicles and machines engaged in construction works in Chhattisgarh's Dantewada district. No person was reported to be injured in the incident, which took place at around 1.30 am at Bangali camp under Bhansi police station limits, a senior police official said.

A 46-year-old man was killed allegedly after being hit by a truck laden with LPG cylinders in Jharkhand's Godda, police said. The truck driver attempted to flee the scene after hitting the motorcyclist and ended up overturning the vehicle on the Godda-Lalmatiya road area, leaving over half a dozen others injured, they said.
