The Assam cabinet on Tuesday decided to rename the Hojai district headquarters as Srimanta Shankardeva Nagar, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said. The town's earlier name was Shankardeva Nagar.

A special POCSO court here on Tuesday sentenced a person to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment for raping a 13-year-old mentally challenged girl. Additional District Judge (POCSO) Madhu Dogra on Tuesday held Satish Rajbhar alias Chhotu guilty of the crime and slapped a fine of Rs 50,000 on him, Special Public Prosecutor Ashwini Kumar Mishra (POCSO) said. The court said the entire amount recovered from the fine should be given to the parents of the mentally challenged girl.

Senior BJP leader and seven-time MLA from Varanasi South Shyamdev Rai Chaudhary died at a hospital here on Tuesday, a local BJP leader said. Chaudhary, who was 85 years old, was ailing from some days. He was popularly known as 'Dada'. BJP Mahanagar president Vidyasagar Rai said Chaudhary was admitted to a private hospital in Mahmoorganj after he suffered a brain haemorrhage.

Amid speculation that a Cabinet reshuffle was on cards, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar on Tuesday indicated about the possibility of such an exercise in the days ahead, as he noted that few ministers have been given a "message" about their term. Shivakumar, who is also the state Congress president, hinted about it, as he referred to the term of office of panchayat chairman being fixed to two years with a message that they will have to demit office after that, and a similar message being given to some ministers too.

Acting swiftly on the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) directions to bring the culprits to book expeditiously, the NIA has launched thorough investigations into three major cases relating to the recent spate of violence in Manipur, an official statement issued on Tuesday said. With a view to unearthing the larger conspiracy behind the brutal attacks, the anti-terror agency re-registered three cases afresh on November 13 after the MHA decided to hand over the investigations to the NIA considering the gravity of the offences and the escalating violence in the strife-torn state, the statement said.

A 23-year-old man, who was allegedly thrashed and urinated on by some people in Meerut last year, died on Tuesday after having a drinking session with his friends at a hotel, police said. A video surfaced on social media last year where Ritik was seen being thrashed and urinated on by some people. Circle Officer Navina Shukla said that there is no connection between Ritik's death and the incident that happened a year ago.

Eight people, including six children, died when a small boat carrying an unspecified number of migrants sank off the coast of the Greek island of Samos, officials said Monday. In a separate incident on a different island, an elderly man died as a group of 27 migrants made landfall in a small boat, the coast guard said. Nobody was reported missing.

The body of an unidentified woman was found stuffed in two gunny bags near the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, police said on Tuesday. The body of a woman, who appeared to be in her mid to late 30s, was stuffed in two gunny bags and dumped in the bushes near the expressway. As per preliminary information, the woman might have been murdered two days ago, and the body had started decomposing, the official said, adding no evidence was recovered at the scene to ascertain the deceased's identity.

A student was killed and several students and teachers were injured as the bus carrying them to a picnic spot overturned near here on Tuesday morning, police said. The accident took place when students and teachers of Saraswati High School in Shankar Nagar area here were heading for a picnic spot in neighbouring Wardha district in five buses.

Jewellery approximately worth Rs 1 crore was stolen from a shop Delhi's Kotwali Police Station area a few days ago. The police arrested the shop owners servant and recovered all the ornaments.

"An person who had been working for one jeweller for 10 years went to the shop of another jeweller and claimed his boss needed some jewellery. The second jeweller handed over 30 necklaces and 112 rings, but instead of delivering them, the employee fled with the ornaments. The incident was reported, and we assigned a special team to investigate. The accused was apprehended and confessed that he committed the theft due to a debt of  Rs 80 lakh said Raja Banthia, DCP North.

According to the source, the MPs of the Shiv Sena Eknath Shinde faction have sought time to meet Prime Minister Modi. If the time to meet the Prime Minister is fixed, then all the MPs will work as a kind of messenger and can also appeal to the PM to allow Eknath Shinde to remain as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra.
