In a suspected case of honour killing, a man dragged his niece out of her house and slit her throat on Saturday for eloping and marrying a man of a different caste, police here said. The man surrendered at a police station in the afternoon with the murder weapon, a sickle, they said. The incident happened at Bajnagar village under the Pisawan Police Circle.

Mizoram Law Minister TJ Lalnuntluanga is likely to visit violence-hit Manipur where hundreds of people from his state were stranded, officials said on Saturday. The ruling MNF's youth wing president L Thangmawia, an MLA, and a leader of the Central Young Mizo Association (CYMA) are expected to accompany him, they said.

Karnataka Congress chief D K Shivakumar Saturday exuded confidence that his party would win at least 141 seats in the May 10 assembly polls and asserted that he would abide by whatever the party decides on the issue of chief ministership. In an interview with PTI, Shivakumar said the Congress will get a comfortable majority in Karnataka and the win would open the doors for the Lok Sabha elections as the party's victory in the state in 1978 had done. The Karnataka Congress chief lashed out at the BJP for raising issues such as the Uniform Civil Code and National Register of Citizens in its manifesto for the assembly polls, saying it shows their "bankruptcy" of ideas and vision for the state.

Four members of a family and a driver were killed when a speeding truck collided with their car in Maharashtra's Sangli district, police said on Saturday. The accident took place near Jath town on Vijapur-Guhagar road around 11 pm on Friday, an official said. "The family was traveling from Vijapur to Jath. When the car reached Amrutwadi Phata, a speeding truck laden with soil, collided with their vehicle," the official said.

Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra will be arriving here for election campaign on Sunday, the party said. She will be addressing a public meeting at the Kolnad grounds in Mulki, Congress leader Manjunath Bhandary said. Around half a lakh people from Mangaluru North, Moodbidri and Kaup constituencies will take part, he said. More than 4,000 roads have been cleared of encroachments in villages of Maharashtra's Latur district, an official said on Saturday.
Farmers were inconvenienced while travelling to their fields and transporting produce due to encroachments. Hence, 4,585 roads were cleared under 'Maharajswa Abhiyan’ launched by collector Prithviraj BP, the official said. Encroachments were recorded on at least 4,980 farm roads and as on April 30, 4,585 roads have been cleared, he said, adding that the work on remaining roads is underway.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Saturday announced to give tax-free status to 'The Kerala Story' in the state, a day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi credited the movie for bringing out terror conspiracies and used it to attack the Congress during a rally in Karnataka. “We have already made a law against religious conversion in Madhya Pradesh. Since this film creates awareness, everyone should watch this film. Parents, children and daughters should watch it. That's why the Madhya Pradesh government is giving tax-free status to the movie ‘The Kerala Story’,” Chouhan said.

Rains lashed several parts of Delhi on Saturday, with the minimum temperature settling at 20.1 degrees Celsius, four notches below normal, according to the India Meteorological Department. The relative humidity was recorded at 63 per cent at 8:30 am. East, central, southeast Delhi and other parts of the city received a fresh spell of rain. The IMD has predicted generally cloudy skies with light rain or drizzle during the day. The maximum temperature is likely to settle around 36 degrees Celsius.

Two people were killed when the motorcycle on which they were travelling rammed into a tree here as the driver lost control of the two-wheeler, police said on Saturday. One person was injured in the incident which took place in Raipur Tiaee village under the Lalganj police station area on Friday night, they said. The deceased were identified as Sandeep Yadav (30) and Pramod Singh (46). The injured has been referred to Prayagraj for treatment, Additional Superintendent of Police Rohit Mishra said. The three were returning from a wedding ceremony when the accident took place, he said. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem examination, the police said.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Saturday reached Jammu to take stock of the security situation in the border districts of Rajouri and Poonch, where terrorists have killed 35 people, including 26 soldiers, in eight attacks since October 2021. Soon after arriving, Singh, accompanied by Army chief General Manoj Pande, left for Rajouri, where an anti-terrorist operation is underway in the forested Kandi area, officials said. Five army personnel were killed and a major-rank officer was injured during a combing operation -- 'Operation Trinetra' -- in the Kandi area on Friday. A holed up terrorist was killed and one more is believed to be injured this morning. Officials said the army chief reached Jammu from Delhi ahead of the defence minister, who followed him minutes later.

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra will kick off the Congress’ campaign for the year-end Madhya Pradesh Assembly polls from Jabalpur next month, a party functionary has said. The last Assembly elections in MP were held on November 28, 2013. “Priyanka ji will launch the party's campaign and ‘Sankalp 2023’ on June 12 here,” Jabalpur mayor and Congress' city chief Jagat Bahadur Singh told PTI on Saturday. The Congress general secretary will hold a 2-km roadshow in the city and address a rally, Singh said. “We are expecting a crowd of 1.5 to 2 lakh. For this we are going to hold meetings of leaders in Mahakoshal area shortly,” Singh said.

Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal Saturday questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi's "silence" over the sexual harassment allegations against WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh and asked whether the accused is so important electorally in Uttar Pradesh that he cannot be removed from the post till the probe is over. Sibal's attack on the government came a day after Delhi Police recorded the statements of seven women wrestlers in connection with the cases registered against Wrestling Federation of India  (WFI) chief Singh.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Saturday expressed grief over the death of a 25-year old jawan from Darjeeling who was among the five Indian soldiers who lost their life during a gunfight with terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir. Banerjee said that she was deeply shocked to learn about the death of Siddhant Chetri and extended her condolences to the bereaved family of the soldier. “Deeply shocked to learn that our Siddhant Chetri, a 25 year young jawan from Bijanbari, Darjeeling, is among the five valiant soldiers of the Indian Army who lost their lives during an encounter with the terrorists in a special operation at Rajouri in J&K yesterday. Our patriotic jawans laid down their lives to neutralise the terrorists and their supreme sacrifice will never be forgotten,” Banerjee tweeted.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi began his 26 km roadshow in the city on Saturday morning, campaigning for the BJP, ahead of May 10 Assembly polls in Karnataka. The roadshow from Someshwar Bhavan RBI Ground in Bengaluru South to Malleshwaram's Sankey Tank is expected to be covered in about three-and-half hours, according to party sources. Modi's roadshow today will be passing through parts of south and central Bengaluru, touching about a dozen Assembly segments, they said.

In a rare incident, a woman passenger was bitten by a scorpion onboard an Air India flight from Nagpur to Mumbai last month. On landing at the airport, the passenger was attended by a doctor, subsequently treated at a hospital and discharged, the airline said in a statement on Saturday. Air India said there was an "extremely rare and unfortunate incident involving a scorpion biting a passenger onboard our flight AI 630 on April 23, 2023". According to the airline, it followed the protocol and conducted complete inspection of the aircraft and found the scorpion after which a due fumigation process was carried out.

A Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) militant was killed in an encounter with security forces in Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday, police said. After receiving information about the presence of militants in the Karhama Kunzer area of Baramulla, a cordon and search operation was launched, a police official said. It turned into an encounter after militants fired upon the forces who retaliated. One militant was killed in the exchange of fire, the official said.

A terrorist was killed and another was most likely injured on Saturday in an ongoing operation in the densely forested area of Rajouri district in Jammu and Kashmir, Army said. Five army personnel were killed and a major-rank officer was injured on Friday in an explosion triggered by the militants during the ongoing operation to flush out the terrorists.

A 23-year-old man from Maharashtra’s Palghar district has been arrested on the charge of killing his mother’s live-in partner, an official said on Saturday. The murder took place at Virendra Nagar locality in Palghar on Thursday night, the official said. According to Sachin Navadkar, the public relations officer of the Palghar district rural police, the woman, who sells vegetables, had been living with a man for the past four years.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has asked the chief secretary to talk to his counterpart in violence-hit Manipur to provide adequate security to people from the state living there. He also asked the chief secretary to make arrangements for the safe return of those who are willing to come back to their native places in the eastern state. "The chief minister has asked chief secretary Amir Subhani to speak to his counterpart in Manipur so that adequate security can be provided to the people from Bihar living there, following the violence in the north-eastern state," a statement issued by the CMO said on Friday.

The Odisha government has asked the Collectors of 18 coastal and adjoining districts to be prepared for any eventuality in view of the forecast of a cyclonic storm. A cyclonic circulation is likely to develop over southeast Bay of Bengal on Saturday. Under its influence, a low-pressure area is likely to form over the same region on Sunday. It is likely to intensify into a depression over the southeast Bay of Bengal on Monday, the weather office said. Thereafter, it is likely to further intensify into a cyclonic storm while moving nearly northwards towards the central Bay of Bengal, it said.

In the exchange of firing, one militant was killed, the official said, adding the identity and group affiliation of the slain militant were being ascertained.

A strong, shallow offshore earthquake hit central Japan on Friday afternoon, killing at least one person and injuring more than 20 others and disrupting plans for holidaymakers. The magnitude 6.2 quake struck Ishikawa prefecture on the west coast of Japan's main island of Honshu, the U.S. Geological Survey said. The Japan Meteorological Agency measured the quake at 6.5 and said it was centred at a depth of about 12 kilometres (7.5 miles). More than 50 aftershocks strong enough to be felt have been recorded since, including one at 5.8 magnitude on Friday night.

Fresh firing has started after a contact was established between security forces and terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir’s Rajouri district in the wee hours of Saturday morning, officials said. According to a statement from the Army’s Northern Command, its personnel have been conducting "relentless intelligence-based operations to flush out a group of terrorists involved in an ambush on an Army truck in the Tota Gali area of Bhata Dhurian in Jammu region last month". "In the ongoing operation in Kandi Forest in Rajouri sector, contact was established with terrorists at 0115 hours today and firing was started," PRO Defence Lt Col Devender Anand said.

A CRPF CoBRA commando on leave was shot dead by armed assailants in his village in Manipur's Churachandpur district on Friday, officials said. Constable Chonkholen Haokip of delta company of the 204th CoBRA battalion was killed around 2-3 pm, they said. The circumstances in which he was killed are not clear, but it is understood that some assailants donning police-like fatigue entered his village and killed him, senior officials told PTI.
