    In a suspected case of honour killing, a man dragged his niece out of her house and slit her throat on Saturday for eloping and marrying a man of a different caste, police here said.     Karnataka Congress chief D K Shivakumar Saturday exuded confidence that his party would win at least 141 seats in the May 10 assembly polls and asserted that he would abide by whatever the party decides on the issue of chief ministership. In an interview with PTI, Shivakumar said the Congress will get a comfortable majority in Karnataka and the win would open the doors for the Lok Sabha elections as the party's victory in the state in 1978 had done.     Four members of a family and a driver were killed when a speeding truck collided with their car in Maharashtra's Sangli district, police said on Saturday. The accident took place near Jath town on Vijapur-Guhagar road around 11 pm on Friday, an official said. "The family was traveling from Vijapur to Jath. When the car reached Amrutwadi Phata, a speeding truck laden with soil, collided with their vehicle," the official said.

    Maha: Encroachments removed from more than 4,000 roads in Latur district

    More than 4,000 roads have been cleared of encroachments in villages of Maharashtra's Latur district, an official said on Saturday.
    Farmers were inconvenienced while travelling to their fields and transporting produce due to encroachments. Hence, 4,585 roads were cleared under 'Maharajswa Abhiyan’ launched by collector Prithviraj BP, the official said. Encroachments were recorded on at least 4,980 farm roads and as on April 30, 4,585 roads have been cleared, he said, adding that the work on remaining roads is underway.

    Parts of Delhi receive fresh spell of rain

    Rains lashed several parts of Delhi on Saturday, with the minimum temperature settling at 20.1 degrees Celsius, four notches below normal, according to the India Meteorological Department. The relative humidity was recorded at 63 per cent at 8:30 am. East, central, southeast Delhi and other parts of the city received a fresh spell of rain. The IMD has predicted generally cloudy skies with light rain or drizzle during the day. The maximum temperature is likely to settle around 36 degrees Celsius.

    2 killed as motorcycle crashes into tree in UP

    Two people were killed when the motorcycle on which they were travelling rammed into a tree here as the driver lost control of the two-wheeler, police said on Saturday. One person was injured in the incident which took place in Raipur Tiaee village under the Lalganj police station area on Friday night, they said. The deceased were identified as Sandeep Yadav (30) and Pramod Singh (46). The injured has been referred to Prayagraj for treatment, Additional Superintendent of Police Rohit Mishra said. The three were returning from a wedding ceremony when the accident took place, he said. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem examination, the police said.

    Defence minister reaches Jammu; leaves for Rajouri

    Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Saturday reached Jammu to take stock of the security situation in the border districts of Rajouri and Poonch, where terrorists have killed 35 people, including 26 soldiers, in eight attacks since October 2021. Soon after arriving, Singh, accompanied by Army chief General Manoj Pande, left for Rajouri, where an anti-terrorist operation is underway in the forested Kandi area, officials said. Five army personnel were killed and a major-rank officer was injured during a combing operation -- 'Operation Trinetra' -- in the Kandi area on Friday. A holed up terrorist was killed and one more is believed to be injured this morning. Officials said the army chief reached Jammu from Delhi ahead of the defence minister, who followed him minutes later.

    West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Saturday expressed grief over the death of a 25-year old jawan from Darjeeling who was among the five Indian soldiers who lost their life during a gunfight with terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir. Banerjee said that she was deeply shocked to learn about the death of Siddhant Chetri and extended her condolences to the bereaved family of the soldier. “Deeply shocked to learn that our Siddhant Chetri, a 25 year young jawan from Bijanbari, Darjeeling, is among the five valiant soldiers of the Indian Army who lost their lives during an encounter with the terrorists in a special operation at Rajouri in J&K yesterday. Our patriotic jawans laid down their lives to neutralise the terrorists and their supreme sacrifice will never be forgotten,” Banerjee tweeted.

    Scorpion bites woman passenger onboard Air India flight

    In a rare incident, a woman passenger was bitten by a scorpion onboard an Air India flight from Nagpur to Mumbai last month. On landing at the airport, the passenger was attended by a doctor, subsequently treated at a hospital and discharged, the airline said in a statement on Saturday. Air India said there was an "extremely rare and unfortunate incident involving a scorpion biting a passenger onboard our flight AI 630 on April 23, 2023". According to the airline, it followed the protocol and conducted complete inspection of the aircraft and found the scorpion after which a due fumigation process was carried out.

It turned into an encounter after militants fired upon the forces who retaliated. One militant was killed in the exchange of fire, the official said.

    A 23-year-old man from Maharashtra’s Palghar district has been arrested on the charge of killing his mother’s live-in partner, an official said on Saturday. The murder took place at Virendra Nagar locality in Palghar on Thursday night, the official said.     The Odisha government has asked the Collectors of 18 coastal and adjoining districts to be prepared for any eventuality in view of the forecast of a cyclonic storm. A cyclonic circulation is likely to develop over southeast Bay of Bengal on Saturday. Under its influence, a low-pressure area is likely to form over the same region on Sunday. It is likely to intensify into a depression over the southeast Bay of Bengal on Monday, the weather office said. Thereafter, it is likely to further intensify into a cyclonic storm while moving nearly northwards towards the central Bay of Bengal, it said.

    Strong quake in central Japan; 1 dead, more than 20 injured

    A strong, shallow offshore earthquake hit central Japan on Friday afternoon, killing at least one person and injuring more than 20 others and disrupting plans for holidaymakers. The magnitude 6.2 quake struck Ishikawa prefecture on the west coast of Japan's main island of Honshu, the U.S. Geological Survey said. The Japan Meteorological Agency measured the quake at 6.5 and said it was centred at a depth of about 12 kilometres (7.5 miles). More than 50 aftershocks strong enough to be felt have been recorded since, including one at 5.8 magnitude on Friday night.

    Fresh firing has started after a contact was established between security forces and terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir’s Rajouri district in the wee hours of Saturday morning, officials said. According to a statement from the Army’s Northern Command, its personnel have been conducting "relentless intelligence-based operations to flush out a group of terrorists involved in an ambush on an Army truck in the Tota Gali area of Bhata Dhurian in Jammu region last month". "In the ongoing operation in Kandi Forest in Rajouri sector, contact was established with terrorists at 0115 hours today and firing was started," PRO Defence Lt Col Devender Anand said.

    CRPF CoBRA commando on leave shot dead in Manipur

    A CRPF CoBRA commando on leave was shot dead by armed assailants in his village in Manipur's Churachandpur district on Friday, officials said. Constable Chonkholen Haokip of delta company of the 204th CoBRA battalion was killed around 2-3 pm, they said. The circumstances in which he was killed are not clear, but it is understood that some assailants donning police-like fatigue entered his village and killed him, senior officials told PTI.
