    The Delhi University on Sunday deferred spot admission for entrance-based undergraduate courses in view of many university departments and officials being affected by COVID-19.

    The hill shrine of Lord Ayyappa in Sabarimala opened on Sunday evening for the annual two-month long Mandala-Makaravillakku season, adhering to strict COVID-19 protocol. Devotees would be allowed inside the temple only from Monday morning, temple sources said.

    Alwar: Five shop destroyed in fire

    Five shops in a shopping complex were gutted in Rajasthan’s Alwar on Saturday night, police said. The incident took place in the Chudi market after a fire broke out in one of the shops.

    The flames were doused, SHO Kotwali police station Rajesh Sharma said.

    He said no loss of life was reported in the incident. The matter is being probed, he added.

    12-year-old girl killed as hut catches fire in UP's Ballia

     A 12-year-old girl was killed as her hut caught fire in this Uttar Pradesh district, police said on Sunday. According to Narhi Station House Officer (SHO) Gyaneshwar Mishra, the incident took place in Kulharhia village on Saturday night.

    Mishra said on Saturday night, when people were celebrating Diwali, the hut of Avadh Bihari Ram suddenly caught fire at around 10 pm and it assumed a huge proportion. A girl, identified as Sonam (12), died due to burns in the incident, the SHO said.

    Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu greeted the people of Jharkhand on the state's formation day on Sunday. He also paid tributes to tribal leader Birsa Munda on his birth anniversary. Known as the "Land of Forests", Jharkhand is a treasure trove of minerals and the people of the state have contributed immensely to the growth of the nation, Naidu wrote on Twitter.

    "My best wishes to the people of the state for a prosperous future," he said. "My humble tributes to the iconic tribal freedom fighter Birsa Munda on his birth anniversary today. Known as Dharti Aaba 'Father of Earth', Birsa Munda mobilised the tribals against the oppression of the British," Naidu said.

    Jharkhand was carved out of Bihar in 2000 on the birth anniversary of Birsa Munda.
