    RBI allows offline digital payments

    To push digital transactions in rural and semi-urban areas, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Monday issued a framework allowing offline payments up to Rs 200 per transaction, subject to an overall limit of Rs 2,000. An offline digital payment means a transaction that does not require internet or telecom connectivity.

    Under the offline mode, payments can be carried out face-to-face (proximity mode) using any channel or instrument like cards, wallets, and mobile devices.

    These transactions will not require an additional factor of authentication (AFA), the Reserve Bank of India said, adding that since the transactions are offline, alerts (by way of SMS and/or e-mail) will be received by the customer after a time lag.

    21 abducted schoolchildren rescued in northwestern Nigeria

    At least 21 schoolchildren in Nigeria have been rescued hours after they were abducted by armed groups in the West African country's troubled northwestern region, police said.

    The schoolchildren were abducted on Friday while they were travelling with their teacher from the Bakura area to an Islamic school in neighboring Katsina state, police spokesman Mohammed Shehu said in a statement over the weekend.

    Security forces responded and rescued the 21 students and are “currently working to rescue the remaining victims and apprehend the perpetrators,” Shehu said.

    He did not say how many hostages are still being held but said the assailants seized travellers from as many as five vehicles, suggesting there are many more still in captivity.

    “The 75-crore Suryanamaskar project is also a tribute to 75 years of India’s independence. For those who can participate in the project, the yogic practice of Suryanamaskar which literally means ‘sun salutation’ is slated for 21 days for 13 times a day. The project would last till 20 February from 1 January 2022,” it said.

    Turkey's inflation hits a 19-year high of 36 per cent

    Turkey's yearly inflation climbed by the fastest pace in 19 years, jumping to 36.08 per cent in December, official data showed on Monday.

    The Turkish Statistical Institute said the consumer price index increased by 13.58 per cent in December from the previous month, further eroding peoples' purchasing power. The yearly increase in food prices was 43.8 per cent, the data showed. The yearly inflation rate was the highest since September 2002.

    Inflation has been rising in the country while the Turkish lira has been slumping to record lows after the country's central bank — under pressure from President Recep Tayyip Erdogan — cut a key interest rate by 5 percentage points in September.

    Minimum temperature rises across most places in Kashmir

    Most places in Kashmir experienced warmer than usual nights as minimum temperature at several places stayed above the freezing point on Monday. Srinagar recorded the minimum temperature of 3.0 degrees Celsius, up from the previous night's 0.3 degrees Celsius, the officials said.

    Gulmarg, the famous skiing resort in north Kashmir, recorded a low of minus 5.8 degrees Celsius -- slightly up from previous night's minus 6.2 degrees Celsius.

    The officials said Pahalgam, which serves as the base camp for the annual Amarnath yatra, recorded a low of minus 3.0 degrees Celsius – down from minus 1.7 degrees Celsius the previous night.

    The Delhi Assembly on Monday revoked the suspension of BJP MLA Jitendra Mahajan who was suspended from the House last month.

    Mahajan's suspension was revoked following a voice vote in favour of a motion, requesting the revocation, moved by Leader of Opposition Ramvir Bidhuri.

    He requested Speaker Ram Niwas Goel to terminate the suspension.

    The Delhi High Court on Monday granted more time to Whatsapp and Facebook to file their response over notices issued to them by the Competition Commission of India (CCI).

    Centre urges SC to schedule hearing of EWS quota matter related to NEET-PG admissions on Tuesday

    The Centre requested the Supreme Court on Monday to schedule a hearing in a matter related to the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) quota in connection with the NEET-PG admissions on Tuesday, citing "some urgency".

    A bench of justices DY Chandrachud and AS Bopanna told Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, who mentioned the matter before the court on behalf of the Centre, that the EWS quota matter is being heard by a three-judge bench of the top court.

    "The moment today's work gets over, I would make a request to CJI NV Ramana for the listing of the case," Justice Chandrachud said.

    Mehta said if it is not possible to list the matter on Tuesday, then it could be listed on Wednesday.

    One more arrested in Lakhimpur Kheri lynching case

    The Special Investigation Team (SIT) has arrested one more farmer in connection with the alleged lynching of three BJP workers during the violence that took place in Lakhimpur Kheri on October 3 last year. Lakhimpur Kheri police and senior prosecution officer (SPO) SP Yadav said that Gurpreet Singh, 22, had been absconding since the SIT released pictures of the suspects nearly two months ago.

    Seven farmers have been arrested so far in connection with the lynching case.

    World-renowned paleoanthropologist Richard Leakey, who unearthed evidence that helped prove humankind evolved in Africa, died on Sunday at the age of 77, Kenya's President Uhuru Kenyatta confirmed in a statement.

    Odisha records 43 pc growth rate in GST collection

    Goods and Services Tax (GST) collection of Odisha has touched a collection of Rs 4080.14 crore during December 2021 as against Rs 2860.20 crore collected during December 2020 registering a growth of 43 per cent.

    As per the Commissionerate of Commercial Tax and Goods and Services Tax, Odisha, "The growth of collection during December 2021 is also the highest amongst major states for the 4th consecutive month. This is also the second-highest ever gross collection of GST by the state since launch of GST."

    The progressive GST collection till December 2021 is Rs 32,113 crore against Rs 20,089 crore till December 2020 with growth of 60 per cent. The corresponding collection till December 2019 was Rs 21,750 crore.
