    A balloon seller was killed while two people were injured when a cylinder used for filling balloons with gas exploded here on Sunday, police said. The incident occurred in Phutahwa Inar under Chauri Chaura police station area, they said. The deceased has been identified as Srikishun Gupta (35), they said.

    MP: School headmaster gets five years in jail for taking bribe of Rs 2,000

    A court in Chhatarpur in Madhya Pradesh has sentenced the headmaster of a school to five years in jail for taking a bribe of Rs 2,000 from a guest teacher. Chandrabhan Sen was convicted under the Prevention of Corruption Act by special court judge Sudhashu Sinha on Saturday and was also fined Rs 30,000, special public prosecutor KK Gautam said.

    Tamil Nadu: 4 from returning after New Year party in Goa die in road accident

    Four people from Tamil Nadu, who were heading towards Gokarna after New Year celebrations in Goa, were killed when the car that the group of friends was travelling in collided head on with a Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation bus on Sunday, police said. One person sustained serious injuries and was admitted to the hospital, they added.

    Ukraine, hit by fresh Russian missiles, faces grim New Year

    Ukrainians had a grim start to 2023 on Sunday, with yet more sirens and fresh missile attacks on their territory, as the death toll from Russia's massive New Year Eve assault across the country climbed to at least three. Night-time shelling that battered parts of the southern city of Kherson killed one person, wounded another and blew out hundreds of windows in a children's hospital, according to deputy presidential chief of staff Kyrylo Tymoshenko. Meanwhile, a 22-year-old woman injured in a rocket attack in eastern Khmelnytskyi later died of her wounds, the city's mayor Oleksandr Symchyshyn said.

    The Gujarat police cracked down on people found consuming liquor, drinking and driving and violating traffic rules during New Year celebrations in the dry state. As people came out in large numbers at clubs and hotels, some even resorted to vandalism at a venue in Ahmedabad city where organisers prepared to stop the party at midnight in view of the notification issued by the administration.
