Senior BJP leader Uma Bharti on Tuesday said she was disappointed that the bill reserving 33 per cent seats for women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies does not carve out a quota for women from the Other Backward Classes (OBCs).

A 35-year-old garlic vendor in Noida was stripped and assaulted by a commission agent and his aides over non-payment of a part of a Rs 5,600 loan, police said on Tuesday.  Two persons, including the 'aadhti' (commission agent), have been arrested and strictest action would be taken against them, Additional DCP (Central Noida) Rajiv Dixit said. 

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Tuesday justified the CPI(M) not sending a representative to the INDIA coordination committee and said the Left party opposed the idea of it becoming an organisation. He said the decision not to be a part of the coordination committee was not taken now but much earlier.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Tuesday said the Narishakti Vandan Bill is a "revolutionary" step towards women empowerment. The government on Tuesday introduced the bill to provide 33 per cent reservation to women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies. It was the first bill to be introduced in the new Parliament building.

A powerful Improvised Explosive Device (IED) was found in Jharkhand's West Singhbhum district on Tuesday, police said. The IED weighing 8 kg was found during an anti-Naxal operation at a forest near Rabuahatu village in Goilkera police station area, they said.

A 22-year-old man was arrested for allegedly cheating people on the pretext of helping them to count cash at banks, police said on Tuesday. The accused has been identified as Saheb Kumar, a resident of Bihar, they said. Police visited the crime spots and collected footage from CCTV cameras to track the suspect. On Monday, the suspect was apprehended, Deputy Commissioner of Police (south) Chandan Chowdhary said.

Ten more people were found positive for scrub typhus infection in Odisha in the last 24 hours, taking the total number of such cases to 832, a health official said on Tuesday. All the new cases were detected in Sundargarh district, he said.

Four friends travelling in a car drowned, while another occupant was missing after their vehicle coming from Rajasthan plunged into a lake near a village in Gujarat's Gandhinagar district, said police on Tuesday. A group of farmers in a village in Maharashtra's Latur district withdrew their indefinite hunger strike on Tuesday after the local administration assured to release their pending instalments under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-Kisan), a sarpanch said. Farmers from Chilwantwadi village under Nilanga tehsil of the district launched an indefinite hunger strike on Monday in front of the collector office to protest against district administration for keeping them deprived of benefits under the PM-Kisan scheme.

A youth allegedly slit a five-year-old’s throat with a sharp edged weapon killing her on the spot for touching his bicycle, police said on Tuesday. Police have taken the accused, 21-year-old Deepak, into custody, they said.

Police have arrested 15 people, including seven women, from an eatery here who were allegedly engaged in converting people to Christianity by offering money to them, officials said. The group was on its way to attend a religious congregation in the district's Karhera area where poor people would be lured into adopting Christianity, ACP Sahibabad Bhaskar Verma said.

The price of natural gas produced from difficult areas like KG-D6 of Reliance Industries is likely to be cut by about 14 per cent from next month in line with softening energy prices, sources said. For the six-month period starting October 1, the price of gas from deepsea and high-pressure, high-temperature (HPTP) areas is likely to be cut to around USD 10.4 per million British thermal unit from the current USD 12.12, they said.

A 17-year-old boy died here on Tuesday after he allegedly fell from his apartment on the 24th floor of a building in a group housing society, police said. The police suspect the incident, which took place in Gaur Saundaryam society in the Bisrakh area of Greater Noida, to be a case of suicide.

BSP supremo Mayawati on Tuesday said her party will support any bill that allows reservation for women in Parliament and other legislatures, even if the party's demand for a quota for the SC, ST and OBC within that quota is not met. Her remarks to the media came on a day the government introduced a constitutional amendment bill to reserve one-third of seats in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies for women, reviving a bill pending for 27 years for want of consensus among parties.

A 60-year-old farmer ended his life by jumping in front of a train near Narhauli bridge here, police said on Tuesday. A suicide note recovered from the man suggested he died by suicide after his daughter-in-law and four of her relatives had thrashed him and misbehaved with him, Superintendent of Police (City) Martand Prakash Singh said.

Senior IPS officer Kuldeep Dwivedi has been appointed as Deputy Inspector General (DIG) in the Central Bureau of Investigation, a Personnel Ministry order said. He is currently working as DIG, Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP). The Personnel Ministry has approved lateral shifting of Dwivedi from the position of DIG, ITBP to the post of DIG in the CBI for 5 years up to January 17, 2026, the order said.

Two passengers died after a private bus fell into a canal near Jhabelwali village on the Muktsar-Kotkapura road in Muktsar district on Tuesday, officials said. Muktsar Sub-divisional Magistrate Kanwarjeet Singh confirmed the death of two persosn over the phone.

A fisherman was seriously injured after a pressure cooker exploded while he was cooking on a fishing boat on Tuesday morning, police said. The incident occurred when the fishing boat that ventured into the sea from Beypore in Kozhikode reached off Ezhimala coast of Kannur district.

Authorities found a debris field on Monday from a Marine Corps F-35 stealth fighter jet that crashed in South Carolina after the pilot ejected and parachuted to safety. The debris field was located in rural Williamsburg County, according to the Marine Corps' Joint Base Charleston. The field is about two hours northeast of the base, and residents were being asked to avoid the area while the recovery team worked to secure it.
