Syrian activists says airstrikes on Idlib province kill 7

Syrian government airstrikes over the country's northwestern Idlib province on Thursday killed seven civilians and wounded at least 12, activists and first responders said.
The Syrian opposition, which now holds only a tiny sliver of the country, blamed Russian -backed warplanes for the attack.
Moscow has been a major ally of Syrian President Bashar Assad's forces and helped turn the tide in the country's civil war in his favor.
The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which has a network of activists on the ground, gave the casualty figures, saying a total of 14 airstrikes were launched, killing seven people.
It gave a higher toll for the wounded, saying 15 people were hurt.
Syrian Civil Defence volunteers also said in a statement that the area in the opposition enclave was also hit with surface-to-surface missiles and cluster munitions.

BJP using issue of Yakub Memon's grave to further its political interests, alleges Cong

Maharashtra Congress on Thursday accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of using the issue of alleged beautification of the grave of 1993 Mumbai blasts convict Yakub Memon to further its political interests.
Its statement came amid a controversy that has erupted over the burial place of Memon in Mumbai, wherein the ruling BJP claimed that the grave was "beautified" and attempts were made to turn it into a shrine of sorts. While the BJP blamed the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena, the latter said it was being dragged into the issue unnecessarily.
Swinging into action following the row, Mumbai police on Thursday removed the LED lights put around the grave of Memon. Police said a probe will be carried out how LED lights and marble tiles came to "adorn" the terror convict’s grave.
Memon was hanged at Nagpur jail in 2015 and buried at the Bada Qabrastan in south Mumbai.
Maharashtra Congress spokesman Atul Londhe said, "Why did the BJP government hand over the body of terrorist Yakub Memon to his family?...BJP is trying to use the issue of his grave to further its political interest. BJP is harmful for the country."

Eight drug smugglers killed in Pakistan's Balochistan province

At least eight suspected drug smugglers and peddlers have been killed in Pakistan's Balochistan province, police said on Thursday.
The smugglers were killed on Wednesday after an exchange of fire with the police,
Quetta’s Deputy Inspector General, Azfar Maisar said.
“We have identified them all as being involved in the drug trade and smuggling and peddling drugs in the city,” he said.
Police also recovered arms and ammunition from them.
Maisar said the exchange took place after they received information about the drug smugglers and peddlers running their business from a den inside a gutter.
During the operation, police also recovered narcotics from them.
“Police seized modern weapons from the possession of the drug peddlers”, he said.
Maisar said the spread of drugs by these peddlers has become a serious issue in Quetta and they have received many complaints from concerned citizens about how drugs were being sold in the city.

European Central Bank to join US Fed in outsized rate hikes

The European Central Bank is set to join the U.S. Federal Reserve in making a jumbo interest rate hike Thursday as it tries to stamp out record inflation — although it risks worsening a recession that economists say is bearing down on Europe.

The meeting of the bank's governing council is not about whether to raise rates for the 19 countries that use the euro currency, but by how much: between half a percentage point or three-quarters of a point, analysts say. The bank made its first increase in 11 years at its last meeting in July, raising rates by a half-point when it usually changes by only a quarter-point.

The ECB, which once predicted no rate increases at all this year, has torn up its road map in the face of record inflation of 9.1% last month, which has been driven by skyrocketing prices for natural gas and lasted much longer than expected.
