    3.14 lakh DL applicants pledge for organ donation in Rajasthan

    After the Rajasthan transport department made it mandatory for driving license applicants to declare their willingness for organ donation or otherwise, over 3.14 lakh candidates have taken the pledge, an official said on Thursday. “This figure is probably the highest in the entire country,” Transport and Road Safety Commissioner Mahendra Soni said. He said due to the non-availability of organs in India, more than five lakh people die prematurely every year. “The department’s initiative is receiving continuous support. Now, the State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (SOTO), run by the state government, has also joined us to take this campaign forward,” he said.

    2 Gurugram 'doctors' nabbed for illegally selling abortion kits

    Two alleged quacks were nabbed here for carrying out illegal termination of pregnancy in Badshahpur and Fazilpur in guise of running medical stores, police said on Thursday. The Drug Controller sealed both the medical stores. According to deputy civil surgeon Pradeep Kumar, a tip off was received at Civil Surgeon Virendra Yadav’s office regarding two men selling abortion kits from their stores. Based on the information, a team was formed and a pregnant woman was used as a decoy at both places and the two accused were apprehended. According to the police, one of the accused was identified as Khalid Hussain, allegedly a doctor at Muskan Medical Store near Sanjeevni Hospital in Badsahpur.

    IMFA's Q3 profit soars to Rs 122 cr

    Indian Metals & Ferro Alloys (IMFA) on Thursday posted nearly four-fold jump in consolidated profit after tax (PAT) at Rs 122.24 crore for December quarter 2021-22, mainly on account of higher income. The company had logged Rs 32.53 crore PAT during October-December period of 2020-21, IMFA said in a regulatory filing.

    Tata Sons chairman N Chandrasekaran calls on PM Modi

    Tata Sons chairman N Chandrasekaran called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday ahead of the official handover of Air India to the Tata Group. Later, Chandrasekaran also visited the Air India headquarters. 

    After a competitive bidding process, the government had on October 8 last year sold Air India to Talace Private Limited, a subsidiary of the Tata Group's holding company, for Rs 18,000 crore.

    Air India was started by the Tata Group in 1932. However, after the country got independence, the airline was nationalised in 1953 by the then prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru.

    Maharashtra: Firemen rescue two-year-old from locked room in Thane

    A two-year-old boy was rescued by firemen from a room he got accidentally locked in at a residential building in Maharashtra’s Thane city, a civic official said. The incident took place around 10.30 am, when the mother of the boy Shiv Jagtap stepped out of the room on the third floor to dry clothes, said Santosh Kadam, chief of the regional disaster management cell. The toddler was playing with the lock of the room, when the latch fell and he was trapped inside, he said. An alarm was raised and teams from the fire brigade and disaster management cell reached the scene and rescued the boy, the official added.

    Myanmar currency notes seized in Mizoram, one held

    A person was arrested in Mizoram's Siaha district after unaccounted Myanmar currency (kyat) notes valued at Rs 4.2 lakh were recovered from his possession, according to a statement issued by Assam Rifles. Acting on a tip-off, troopers of the paramilitary force seized one crore currency notes of the neighbouring country from Khaikhy village near India-Myanmar border on Wednesday, it said. The person was held after he could not produce any valid document for the recovered Myanmar kyat, the statement said. The seized foreign currency notes and the man were handed over to the state excise department for legal action, it said.

    An encounter has broken out between security forces and terrorists at Check Nowgam area of Shopian district in Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday.
    The police said that the two terrorists are trapped. "Encounter has started at Check Nowgam area of Shopian. Police and security forces are alert. Further details shall follow," Kashmir Zone Police said in a tweet.

    Maharashtra: Woman killed, five hurt as car runs into food stall at beach in Palghar

    A woman was killed and five others were injured, few of them seriously, after a car ran into a food stall at Chinchani beach in Maharashtra's Palghar district, police said on Thursday. The incident occurred late on Wednesday evening, following which the driver of the car was arrested, they said. "January 26 being a public holiday, people had thronged the Chinchani beach at Tarapur in large numbers in the evening. However, despite the crowd, a car came onto the beach, but its driver lost control while trying to save a scooter, due to which the four-wheeler ran into one of the food stalls. The woman, who was eating at the stall, died on the spot and five others suffered injuries," he said.

    Delhi residents can now file theft, burglary cases online

    Delhi residents, who have been victims of a house theft or burglary, now don't have to visit a police station to lodge a case. Delhi Police Commissioner Rakesh Asthana, on Wednesday, launched the citizen service app where common people can lodge E-FIR for the incidents of house theft and burglary. A senior police official said that this service has been activated in the e-FIR application for registration of theft cases.

    Mumbai: Three injured in fire following LPG cylinder leak

    Three persons were injured in a fire caused by leakage of gas from an LPG cylinder in suburban Andheri on Wednesday morning. The incident took place at Jain society in Sakinaka area. The fire started in a flat around 8 am. Fire brigade personnel rushed to the spot and doused it within half an hour, the release said. Salim Ansari (38), who suffered 85 per cent burns, was transferred to the government-run Sion hospital and was undergoing treatment. Two others, who suffered minor injuries, were being treated at a local hospital.

    Multi-floor structure collapses in Mumbai; 9 injured

    Nine persons, including a senior citizen and three teenage girls, were injured after a multi-storey structure collapsed in suburban Bandra on Wednesday, a civic official said. The ground plus four-storey structure caved in at around 3.50 pm in the Behram Nagar of the western suburb, he said. Fire brigade and police personnel immediately rushed to the spot and launched a rescue operation, the official said. Nine persons, three of them teenage girls, suffered injuries in the collapse and were admitted to hospitals, he said, adding among the wounded was a 64-year-old man.

    Boy stabbed to death in northeast Delhi

    An 18-year-old boy was allegedly stabbed to death by two men while he was trying to save his friend from their assault. The deceased has been identified as Gulzar. According to police, the incident took place on Monday in Northwest Delhi's Adarsh Nagar when the two accused, identified as Gaurav (19) and Ajay (21), engaged in a fight with Gulzar's friend Suraj over a petty issue in a park. The accused and the victim were known to each other, they added. The two accused escaped the spot after the incident, police said, adding they were arrested later. A case was registered against them under IPC section 302 (murder), they said. Gulzar was rushed to a hospital but he died during treatment, police said.
