    The ICMR has invited independent researchers from across India to contribute to the scientific knowledge related to COVID-19 by submitting their innovative research ideas in identified priority areas, stating that there is scanty knowledge available related to the functional aspects of the virus, its transmission dynamics, immunological response to natural infection and vaccines.

    WHO approves 2nd Chinese vaccine for emergency use

    The World Health Organisation (WHO) said on Tuesday that it has approved China's second COVID-19 vaccine 'Sinovac' for emergency use listing.

    "WHO today validated the Sinovac-CoronaVac COVID-19 vaccine for emergency use, giving countries, funders, procuring agencies and communities the assurance that it meets international standards for safety, efficacy and manufacturing," the UN health agency said in a statement.

    The vaccine is produced by the Beijing-based pharmaceutical company Sinovac.

    Over 21.83 crore doses of COVID-19 vaccine administered in India so far

    The cumulative number of COVID-19 vaccine doses administered in the country has crossed 21.83 crore, the Union health ministry said. It said 9,50,401 people in the age group of 18-44 years received their first dose and 15,467 their second dose of COVID-19 vaccine on Tuesday.
     
    Cumulatively, 2,13,01,448 people across the country have received their first dose and 39,282 their second dose since the start of phase three of the vaccination drive, the ministry said.

    Health Ministry presser on Covid situation

    • Active cases are down by 50%, 1.3 lakh decrease in active cases in a day. In 30 states/UT, cases have been consistently declining for one week, it's a positive trend: Lav Agarwal, Joint Secretary, Union Health Ministry
    • 1,27,000 cases have been reported in the last 24 hours. Since May 28, the country is reporting less than 2 lakh cases. There is a decline of infection in the country: Lav Agarwal, Joint Secretary, Health Ministry
    • Recovered cases are more than daily cases now, with recoveries increasing to 92% now; 20 lakh tests on an average in one week: Lav Agarwal, Joint Secretary, Union Health Ministry
    • Total 21.60 crore vaccine doses administered in the country with 1.67 crore doses to health workers, 2.42 crore to front line workers, 15.48 crore to people in 45+ age group while for those in 18-44 age group, 2.03 doses have been administered: Union Health Ministry
    • There is absolutely no change in the schedule of Covishield doses; it will be two doses only. After the first Covishield dose is administered, second dose will be given after 12 weeks. The same schedule is applicable to Covaxin: Union Health Ministry
    • There is no shortage of vaccine. By mid-July or August, we will have enough doses to vaccinate 1 crore people per day. We are confident of vaccinating the whole population by December: Balram Bhargava, ICMR

    Sensex, Nifty end marginally lower on profit-booking

    Equity benchmarks Sensex and Nifty ended marginally lower after range-bound trade on Tuesday as investors booked profits at higher levels amid largely positive cues from global markets.

    The 30-share BSE Sensex ended 2.56 points lower at 51,934.88, while the broader NSE Nifty slipped 7.95 points or 0.05 per cent to 15,574.85.

    ICICI Bank was the top loser in the Sensex pack, shedding nearly 2 per cent, followed by UltraTech Cement, Asian Paints, ITC, Kotak Bank, Axis Bank and PowerGrid. On the other hand, ONGC, Bajaj Finance, SBI, Bajaj Auto and HDFC were among the gainers.
