    BJP members 'didn't allow' some members to raise Manipur issue in MCD House: Delhi mayor

     Delhi Mayor Shelly Oberoi on Monday said some MCD members tried to raise the Manipur issue in the municipal House, but the BJP councillors "did not allow" them to speak and which led to a ruckus.
    Amid the uproar, all major listed agenda for the House "were passed", including extension of services of data entry operators, she said.
    A two-minute silence was observed in the House to mourn the loss of lives in the ethnic clashes in the northeastern state since May.

    Pakistan & China ink six agreements to expedite cooperation under 2nd phase of CPEC

    Pakistan and China on Monday signed six key documents to help undertake the second phase of the USD 60 billion China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) projects under a new model, further cementing the all-weather strategic relations between the "iron brothers".
    Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng witnessed the signing ceremony held here to mark 10 years of the CPEC, a collection of infrastructure and other projects under construction throughout Pakistan since 2013.

    Cop tries to end life in Thane by consuming poison

     A 32-year-old police constable in Thane district on Monday tried to end his life allegedly over frequent quarrels at home, an official said.
    He consumed poison and is currently under treatment in a nearby hospital, the official said.
    No offence has been registered as of now and a probe is underway, the MFC police station official said.

    Rain effect: Delhi's July air best in 5 years, avg max temp lowest since 2016

     Bountiful rains in July gave Delhi its best air quality for the month in five years, while the average maximum temperature also dropped to its lowest level since 2016, according to official data.
    The data from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) also shows that Delhi's average air quality index (AQI) this year so far is the lowest for the corresponding period since 2019, except for 2020 - the year of the COVID-19 lockdown.

    Up to 3-year jail term, steep fine for film piracy: Anurag Thakur

    Parliament on Monday passed a bill mandating a maximum jail term of three years and a fine of up to five per cent of the production cost of the film for persons involved in film piracy and circulation of such content.
    The Cinematograph (Amendment) Bill 2023, which was passed by Rajya Sabha on Thursday last week, was approved by the Lok Sabha after a brief debate amid protests by the opposition demanding a statement by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Parliament on the ethnic violence in Manipur.

    Manipur tribal forum demands withdrawal of state police personnel from Moreh

    The Indigenous Tribal Leaders Forum (ITLF) on Monday threatened to launch an agitation in all the tribal districts of Manipur if the state government failed to withdraw state police personnel from Moreh immediately.
    This comes hours after over 1,000 women in Churachandpur staged a stir demanding removal of police forces from the town bordering Myanmar.
    "To maintain fairness and neutrality, we humbly request the government to withdraw (state) security personnel from Moreh," ILTF said, adding that if the demand is not acceded, "We will be forced to start a public agitation in all tribal districts."

    Pro Vice-Chancellor Mohhamad Gulrez took over as Acting Vice Chancellor three months ago but the formal process of appointing a new VC is still not initiated, the students claimed.

     Over 26.74 lakh people have filed their income tax returns on Monday until 1600 hrs, taking the total number of ITR filing for assessment year 2023-24 to 6.39 crore.

    Myanmar's military-led government extends state of emergency, forcing delay in promised election

    Myanmar's military-controlled government has extended the state of emergency it imposed when the army seized power from an elected government 2 1/2 years ago, state-run media said Monday, forcing a further delay in elections it promised when it took over.
    MRTV television said the National Defence and Security Council met Monday in the capital, Naypyitaw, and extended the state of emergency for another six months starting Tuesday because time is needed to prepare for the elections. The NDSC is nominally a constitutional government body, but in practice is controlled by the military.

    Cong leader and former Kerala Speaker Vakkom Purushothaman dead

    Veteran Congress leader and former Kerala Speaker Vakkom Purushothaman, who also served as Governor of Mizoram, passed away at a private hospital here on Monday, party sources said.
    He was 96.
    Purushothaman was taken to KIMS hospital in the morning due to some health problems, a party leader said.
    Apart from Mizoram, the veteran leader also served as Lieutenant Governor of Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

    Rajya Sabha adjourned for day amid opposition uproar on Manipur issue

    The Rajya Sabha was adjourned for the day on Monday as the opposition kept insisting on a discussion on the Manipur issue under Rule 267 of the House.
    As the House reassembled at 3.30 pm after witnessing four adjournments earlier in the day, Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar said the government is ready for a discussion on the situation in strife-torn Manipur right now.
    He asked the opposition members who were protesting in the House to return to their seats so that the discussion could be initiated.

    Death toll rises to 54 in suicide blast at JUI-F political convention in Pakistan: Police

     The death toll from the powerful suicide bombing at a political convention of a hardline Islamist party in Pakistan's restive Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province sharply rose to 54 on Monday, police said as they intensified efforts to hunt down those behind the massive attack.
    Police also said that an initial probe has suggested that the banned terrorist group ISIS is behind the suicide attack that injured over 100 people in Khar, the capital of Bajaur tribal district.
