    Six cows died and as many fell sick after allegedly eating contaminated millet in a government cow shelter here, officials said on Wednesday. Following the incident, two officials were suspended on charges of negligence, they said. District Magistrate Dr Rajendra Paisian said that in a government cowshed in Sharifpur village under Sambhal police station area, health of many cows suddenly deteriorated after allegedly eating contaminated millet.

    Right to freedom of religion cannot be construed as right to convert others: HC

    Denying bail to a person accused of carrying out illegal conversion, the Allahabad High Court has observed that the Constitution grants citizens the right to freely profess, practice and propagate their religion but it "cannot be extended to construe a collective right to proselytise" or convert other people to one's religion. The order was passed by Justice Rohit Ranjan Agarwal while rejecting the bail plea of Shriniwas Rav Nayak of Maharajganj who was booked under sections 3 and 5 (1) of the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act, 2021.

    Bypolls: Sporadic violence reported in Uttarakhand, West Bengal

    Moderate to brisk polling was recorded in 13 assembly constituencies across seven states where bypolls were held on Wednesday amid sporadic incidents of violence in Uttarakhand and West Bengal. Voting time was from 7 am to 6 pm. The electoral exercise, the first since the Lok Sabha polls, will decide the fate of many veterans and some debutantes, including Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu's wife Kamlesh Thakur. The bypolls are being held against vacancies created either due to deaths or resignation of incumbent members. Barring Uttarakhand and West Bengal, polling has been peaceful in the rest of the states so far.

    A voter turnout of about 71 per cent was recorded in the bypolls in three assembly constituencies of Himachal Pradesh on Wednesday, according to data shared by the state election department. Justice Kohli was speaking on the topic of ‘Second Discourse on Judicial Perspective on Economic Offences and Corporate Malfeasance’ at an event organised by the Centre for Discourses in Criminal and Constitutional Jurisprudence.

    Legendary Prakash Padukone is set to travel as a mentor along with the 15-member Indian badminton squad for the Paris Olympics, beginning on July 26. Padukone, the first Indian to win the All England Championship, was retired in 1991 even as badminton was introduced in the Olympics at the 1992 Barcelona Games.     A 23-year-old man was thrashed to death by a woman's brother for allegedly misbehaving with her near outer Delhi's Jhuggi Dera Gazi Khan area, police said on Wednesday. The accused, Prince, 18, was arrested when he was trying to flee the city, they said. On the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday, the police control room at the Mangol Puri police station received information from a hospital that a man had been beaten up and admitted to the health facility, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer) Jimmy Chiram said.

    Woman official of Madhya Pradesh PR department ends life

    A woman official of the Madhya Pradesh Public Relations Department died allegedly by suicide in her home in the intervening nights of Tuesday-Wednesday, a police official said. Pooja Thapak, aged around 30, was posted as the pubic relations officer (PRO) of the state’s panchayat, rural development and labour minister Prahlad Patel, the official said. She hanged herself in her house apparently after a family dispute, the official said. However, the exact cause behind the extreme step is not yet clear, he said.
