    Man sentenced to death for killing neighbour

    A man was sentenced to death by a court in Jharkhand's West Singhbhum district on Tuesday for murdering his neighbour.
    The principal district and sessions court sentenced Saluka Hembram, a resident of Arahasa village in Goilkera police station area, to death after convicting him under IPC section 302 (murder) for killing Ramdhan Hembram who lived in the same neighbourhood with a sharp weapon in September 2019.

    Elgar Parishad: Court permits activist Teltumbde to visit Karnataka to receive award

     A special court here on Tuesday permitted scholar-activist Anand Teltumbde, an accused in the Elgar Parishad-Maoist links case of Maharashtra, to travel to Karnataka for two days to receive an award from the government in the neighbouring state.
    Teltumbde, currently out on bail in the seven-year-old case, had filed an application seeking permission to travel to Bengaluru for two days from January 31 to receive the Basava Rashtriya Puraskar Award 2022-23 from the Karnataka government.

    Jharkhand: Man kills wife with hammer amid fight over money

     A 34-year-old man allegedly killed his wife by hitting her with a hammer in Jharkhand's Seraikela-Kharswan district, police said on Tuesday. Rajesh Kumar, the husband, was arrested and the blood-stained hammer was recovered from his house in Bantanagar in RIT police station area, they said. Rajesh and his wife Priyanka, 31, were fighting over the last few days as she was demanding money for jewellery and school fees of their children, police said. Amid one such fight between the two on Sunday, Rajesh allegedly pushed his wife, picked a hammer that was lying nearby and hit her on the head in a fit of rage, they said.

    The 40-day harsh winter period known as ‘Chilla-i-Kalan' ended on Tuesday with no snowfall in the plains of Kashmir and below normal precipitation in the higher reaches of the valley, officials said. While there was light to moderate snowfall in the higher reaches of the valley at the fag-end of the 40-day period, most of the Chilla-i-Kalan – when the chances of snowfall are maximum and most frequent – remained dry. The valley witnessed a prolonged dry spell this winter, with no snowfall in the plains. During the 40-day harsh winter period, a cold wave sweeps the region and temperatures drop considerably leading to the freezing of water bodies and water in supply pipes.

    Explosive devices found in border area of J-K's Kathua, defused

    Security forces on Tuesday detected and defused two explosive devices in Jammu and Kashmir's Kathua district, officials said. Locals informed police and the Border Security Force (BSF) about some suspicious material packed in a pothyene bag in the Sherpur area, around 2 kilometers away from the International Border, they said. Secuirty personnel rushed to the spot and a bomb disposal squad was called. The explosive devices were defused safely, the officials said. The matter is being investigated.

    Money laundering case: ED seizes Rs 36 lakh, SUV from Soren's Delhi house

    The Enforcement Directorate has seized Rs 36 lakh, an SUV and some "incriminating" documents after it searched the Delhi residence of Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren, official sources said Tuesday. The federal agency searched the 5/1 Shanti Niketan residence of the JMM leader in south Delhi on Monday and camped there for almost 13 hours in order to question him in a money laundering case linked to an alleged land deal case of Jharkhand. The sources said the ED teams seized about Rs 36 lakh in cash, a HR (Haryana) number plate bearing BMW registered under a "benami" name and some "incriminating" documents during the day-long operation.
