    Income tax filers more than double to 7.78 cr in 10 years

    The number of tax payers filing income tax returns has more than doubled to 7.78 crore in the past 10 years, as per government data. Releasing key statistics, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) on Tuesday said the number of Income Tax Returns (ITRs) filed in FY23 stood at 7.78 crore, showing an 104.91 per cent increase as compared to the 3.8 crore ITRs filed in 2013-14.

    Exchange of fire between SOG Jawans and Maoists in Odisha forest

    Odisha Police's elite Special Operation Group (SOG) on Tuesday busted a Maoist camp following an exchange of fire with the left-wing extremists in Boudh district. The incident took place near Matakupa reserve forest in the Boudh-Kandhamal border when the SOG jawans were undertaking a search operation at Sagada, a senior police officer engaged in anti-Maoist operation said. The official said the ultras, about 25 to 30 in numbers belonging to the KKBN (Kalahandi-Kandhamal-Boudh-Nayagarh) division of the outlawed CPI(Maoist)), fled away from the spot leaving behind their few camp articles and one sophisticated weapon.
    It is suspected that a few Maoists have sustained injuries, he said.

    Navi Mumbai jeweller cheated of gold worth Rs 1.9 cr; one booked

    An offence has been registered against a jewellery shop owner for allegedly cheating a jeweller of gold worth Rs 1.9 crore in Navi Mumbai, police said on Tuesday. Based on a complaint, the police on Monday registered a case under sections 420 (cheating) and 406 (criminal breach of trust) of the Indian Penal Code against Ranjitsingh Bhavarsingh Sisodia, who owns a jewellery shop in Zaveri Bazaar in Mumbai, an official said.

    MP: Army man on leave dies of heart attack while playing cricket

    A 35-year-old Army personnel died of a heart attack while playing cricket during his leave in Tikamgarh district of Madhya Pradesh, an official said on Tuesday. The incident occurred on Sunday in Marguva village. The deceased, identified as Lance Naik Vinod Banskar, died after suffering a heart attack, Dr Yogesh Yadav of district hospital said.

    Police sub-inspector injured in gunfight with criminals

    A police sub-inspector was injured allegedly after suspected criminals opened fire in the Kankerkheda area of this Uttar Pradesh district, officials said on Tuesday. The alleged incident occurred when a police team tried to stop a car carrying the suspected criminals. They opened fire at the police team and injured Munesh, the outpost in-charge, Senior Superintendent of Police Rohit Singh Sajwan said. He was rushed to a hospital where his condition is stated to be stable, the police said.

    Elderly woman bludgeoned to death; her grandson held

    A 70-year-old woman was allegedly bludgeoned to death with a wooden rod by her grandson, who was apparently under the influence of liquor in Palghar district of Maharashtra, police said on Tuesday. The woman was killed on Monday night in her Umbarwadi village in Jawhar taluka, following which the accused was arrested, they said. "When the 23-year-old man, Dharmaveer Vaze, was having dinner at home, he heard his grandmother, Anandi Tokhre, complaining and murmuring to herself. This annoyed him and in a fit of rage, he hit her with a wooden rod, killing her on the spot," an official of Jawhar police station said.

    ED raids in north India states in HUDA refund 'scam' case probe

    The Enforcement Directorate on Tuesday raided multiple locations in Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula and a location in Himachal Pradesh as part of a money laundering probe linked to an alleged fake refund scam in the HUDA, official sources said.     As cold wave continues to wreak havoc in North India, rail and air services remained disrupted on Tuesday (January 23) morning with several trains inbound to Delhi being delayed and numerous flights were late at the IGI airport in the national capital. As many as 28 trains running in from various parts of the country were failing to catch up on their scheduled arrival time in Delhi due to dense fog conditions this morning in the region.
