    Israeli warplanes struck two urban refugee camps in central Gaza on Saturday, as the Biden administration approved a new emergency weapons sale to Israel despite persistent international cease-fire calls over mounting civilian deaths, hunger and mass displacement in the enclave. Even a brief halt in fighting seems out of reach. A senior Hamas official told The Associated Press in Beirut on Saturday that the group has not budged from its position that a permanent cease-fire has to be the starting point for any further releases of Israeli and foreign hostages the group holds, which runs counter to a recent proposal by Egypt for a staged end to the war.

    Punjab Police forms SIT to probe suspected human trafficking after France sends back flight

    Director of Punjab Bureau of Investigation L K Yadav Saturday constituted a Special Investigation Team to probe the case of suspected human trafficking after a Nicaragua-bound flight, carrying mostly Indians, was grounded in France and then sent to India. The plane, an Airbus A340, carrying 276 passengers, mostly Indians, was grounded in France for four days over suspected human trafficking. It landed in Mumbai in the early hours of December 26. Man passengers hail from Punjab. According to an official statement, the four member-SIT is headed by Ferozepur Superintendent of Police (Investigation) Randhir Kumar.

    At least five terrorists were killed in an intense exchange of fire during an operation by security forces in North Waziristan district of the restive Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, according to a media report on Saturday.     Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray on Saturday said he has not yet received the invitation for the consecration of Lord Ram temple in Ayodhya on January 22.     Mohan Bhagwat on two-day visit to West Bengal

    RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat arrived in Kolkata on Saturday afternoon on a two-day visit to West Bengal. Soon after his arrival, Bhagwat visited All India Football Federation (AIFF) president Kalyan Chaubey's residence in the city, and held a closed-door meeting. Chaubey had unsuccessfully contested the 2019 Lok Sabha elections on a BJP ticket against TMC's Mahua Moitra in the Krishnangar seat. Bhagwat is also expected to meet former CBI joint director Upen Biswas in the evening. Biswas had joined the ruling TMC after retiring from CBI and was the minister of the Backward Class Welfare Department from 2011 to 2016.
