    Sri Lanka Navy arrests 43 Indian fishermen for alleged poaching

    The Sri Lankan Navy has arrested 43 Indian fishermen and seized six trawlers for allegedly poaching in the country’s territorial waters, an official statement said on Sunday. The Navy arrested the fishermen in seas Southeast of the Delft Island in Jaffna on Saturday.

    "A special operation conducted by the Navy in seas Southeast of the Delft Island, Jaffna on the night of 18th December 2021, led to seizure of 6 Indian fishing trawlers poaching in Sri Lankan waters, with 43 Indian fishermen aboard," the Navy said in a statement.

    Amit Shah offers prayers at Ganpati temple in Pune

    Union Home Minister Amit Shah visited the Shreemant Dagdusheth Halwai Ganpati temple here on Sunday morning and prayed to the deity. Shah performed 'aarti' and 'abhishek' at the temple and sought the blessings of God, an office-bearer from the temple trust said. The Union minister is on a two-day Maharashtra tour since Saturday. On Sunday, he is slated to visit the Central Forensic Science Laboratory here and a unit of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) at Talegaon in Pune.

    Shah will also attend the convocation of the city-based Vaikunth Mehta National Institute of Cooperative Management, and lay the foundation stone of a statue of warrior king Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj at the Pune Municipal Corporation. He will also address BJP workers at a party congregation here later in the day.

    Man sentenced to life imprisonment for raping teenager

    A POCSO court in Kairana has sentenced a man to life imprisonment for raping a 16-year-old girl in 2020. Special Judge Mumtaz Ali also imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on Azad alias Arvind on Saturday after holding him guilty under various sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. According to POCSO lawyer Pushpendra Malik, the crime took place in Shamli district on February 2, 2020.

    Bengal: 1 killed, 2 seriously injured as motorcycle rams into electric pole

    One person was killed and two others were seriously injured after the motorcycle they were travelling on rammed into a roadside electric pole in West Bengal's Bankura district.

    The accident took place on Deshuria-Phulberia Road near Nabagram in Gangajalghanti police station area on Saturday when the three friends were travelling to Beliatore from Benagari village. The rider lost control and rammed the motorcycle into the electric pole

    4 killed, 2 wounded in gun attack on Mexico holiday party

    Four men were killed in north-central Mexico Saturday when armed assailants burst into a home where a holiday-season party was being held and opened fire.

    Prosecutors in the state of Guanajuato said two other men were wounded in the shooting. The attack occurred before dawn Saturday in the town of Cueramaro, near the border with Jalisco state.

    VHP to launch campaign against religious conversion

    The VHP will launch a campaign against religious conversion from December 20 to 31 in the country, its national joint general secretary Surendra Jian said. Jain, who was speaking to reporters, demanded a law against forced interfaith marriages and for denying benefits due to Dalits and Hindu tribals who convert to other faiths. He claimed that large-scale conversion had taken place during the outbreak of the COVID pandemic.

    "We are in talks with Centre. This is not a political issue. We urge both the central and state governments, belonging to whichever parry, to stop forcible conversion by Muslim and Christian preachers," the VHP leader added.
