Trinamool Congress MLA from Murshidabad Jiban Krishna Saha on Monday skipped appearing before the Enforcement Directorate (ED) sleuths for questioning in connection with their ongoing investigation of the alleged irregularities in the school recruitment, an official said. Saha, who attended the state Assembly, said that he had not received any summons from the central probe agency.

A 24-year-old man was stabbed to death in an attack by four people in a “revenge killing” in south Delhi’s Sangam Vihar area, police on Monday said. According to the police, Lucky, a bike taxi rider, had allegedly killed Shivam in 2015 when he was a juvenile.

Body of an intruder, who was recently shot dead by the BSF while attempting to illegally sneak into India, was repatriated to Pakistan along the International Border on Monday, officials said. The unarmed intruder was gunned down after he ignored repeated warnings and attempted to cross the border fence through the Khora border outpost in the Samba district on the night of July 31. The deceased was identified as Pakistani national Muhammad Affial, a resident of the Punjab province, the officials said. The body was returned to Pakistani Rangers by the BSF at border outpost Octroi in the Suchetgarh sector of the Jammu district, the officials said.

The Rajasthan Assembly was adjourned on Monday amid chaos over the appointment of public prosecutors under sections of Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) instead of Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). Assembly Speaker Vasudev Devnani had to adjourn the House twice over the uproar. The House was adjourned for the day later by Assembly Chairperson Sandeep Sharma.

The Reserve Bank on Monday proposed to lay down principles for management of model risks in credit for banks and other regulated entities with a view to ensuring prudence and robustness. Regulated Entities (REs) generally use various models as part of their credit management, including for credit appraisal, borrower scoring, pricing, and risk management, among others.

Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray on Monday said how many people will benefit from caste-based reservation in government jobs when more employment opportunities are being created in the private sector. Speaking to reporters in Pandharpur town of Solapur district, Thackeray said locals should be given priority in job opportunities. "My stance is that locals should be given priority in job opportunities. Why should caste be a factor in this? If the private sector continues to create jobs, we should think about how many people will actually benefit from reservation in government jobs," the MNS chief said.

The Border Security Force (BSF) on Monday issued a "high alert" across all its formations along the 4,096-km India-Bangladesh border in the wake of the developments in the neighbouring country, officials said. BSF Director General (Acting) Daljit Singh Chawdhary and other senior commanders have landed in Kolkata to review the security situation, they said.

The engine and wagon of a goods train derailed in Beawar district of Rajasthan on Monday, officials said. In charge of Sendra police station Jagdish Prasad said the engine and wagon of the loaded goods train going to Palanpur from Ajmer got derailed after some stones fell on the track from a hill due to rainfall. "The track has also been damaged. Railway officials reached the spot and work to restore the track was started," he said, adding that there was no injury to the train driver or guard.

PDP president Mehbooba Mufti and several other regional party leaders on Monday claimed that they have been placed under house arrest on the fifth anniversary of the reading down of Article 370 of the Constitution that provided special status to Jammu and Kashmir. "I have been placed under house arrest while the PDP office has been locked," Mehbooba told PTI. The former chief minister later took to social media, saying "5th August 2019 will go down in history not just as a dark day for J&K but a blot on Indian democracy".

The Bangladesh government on Monday ordered a complete internet shutdown as protestors asked the general public to join a "Long March to Dhaka", a day after nearly 100 people died in fierce clashes between demonstrators demanding Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's resignation and the ruling party supporters in different parts of the country. A missile attack by Yemen's Houthi rebels struck a Liberian-flagged container ship travelling through the Gulf of Aden, authorities said Sunday, the first assault by the group since Israeli airstrikes targeted them. The Houthis offered no explanation for the two-week pause in their attacks on shipping through the Red Sea corridor, which have seen similar slowdowns since the assaults began in November over Israel's war on Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

In a tragic incident, eight Kanwariyas died of electrocution after their DJ-mounted trolley came in contact with the electric wire in Bihar's Hajipur. Several others were reported injured. All the injured were admitted to City Hospital. The Kanwariyas were prepared to perform Jalabhishek at Baba Hariharnath temple on Monday.
