A man was arrested on Friday for allegedly running an illegal LPG cylinder godown in outer-north Delhi's Narela area, police said. Police recovered at least 529 gas cylinders, nine gas-refilling pumps, two electric weight machines, and five commercial vehicles used for transporting gas cylinders from godown, they said.

On the last date of the withdrawal of nomination papers for the first phase of the forthcoming Jammu and Kashmir Assembly Elections 2024 in the 24 Assembly Constituencies, 25 candidates withdrew their Candidature in the Office of respective Returning Officers across seven districts on Friday. The Office of the Chief Electoral Officer, J&K UT informed that out of the total 244 valid nominations, 25 candidates withdrew their Nominations on the last date of withdrawal i.e. Friday, 30 August, 2024. With this, only 219 validly Nominated Candidates now remain in fray for the 24 Assembly Constituencies where polling will be held in the first phase of the J&K Assembly Elections-2024 on 18 September, 2024.

A Delhi Police head constable on Friday allegedly shot himself with his service pistol inside Paharganj Police Station, an officer said. He is undergoing treatment and his condition is stated to be critical.

Andhra Pradesh Legislature will soon go paperless and digital by becoming a part of the National e-Vidhan Application (NeVA) administered by the Union Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs. The proposal to turn legislative procedures completely paperless and digital was recently approved by the chairman of the Legislative Council Koyye Moshenu Raju and Legislative Assembly Speaker C Ayyannapatrudu.

A deep depression that triggered torrential rains and floods in Gujarat on Friday intensified into cyclone Asna off the coast of Kachchh and the adjoining areas of Pakistan, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said. This is the first cyclonic storm in the Arabian Sea in August since 1976. The name Asna has been given by Pakistan.

The Delhi High Court on Friday listed for hearing on October 9 a batch of petitions concerning the February 2020 riots here, including those seeking FIRs against certain political leaders for alleged hate speeches. A bench headed by Justice Prathiba M Singh said the petitions, filed in the aftermath of the communal violence in north-east Delhi, needed to be heard, while questioning whether some of the reliefs sought in them have "run its course" at this stage.

Army troops on Friday recovered a landmine along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir's Poonch district, officials said. An Army party found the landmine in the Pattri Gali area during a patrol along the LoC, they said.

On West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee's statement 'Bengal jalega, to poora Bharat jalega', Union Minister Chirag Paswan slammed her. He said,  "Nothing can be more shameful than this statement from a CM. One CM is not able to handle the situation in her state. Such incidents are shameful even if they are happening in any other state...what kind of a mindset is this? Does it suit a person who is a sitting CM?... It shows their weakness and failure...I would request the central government to implement the President's Rule in Bengal."

Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said, "Champai Soren is an asset for the BJP and for saving Jharkhand. He is a leader who worked to bring Jharkhand on the right track by becoming the Chief Minister and as a result, spying on him has been started... Champai Soren was insulted, this is an insult not only to Champai Soren but to the entire Jharkhand. He has decided to join the BJP today and we welcome him. His joining will strengthen the BJP here."

Ramdas Soren sworn in as minister in Hemant Soren's cabinet, replaces Champai Soren who switches to BJP.

During his visit to Malvan, Maharashtra Deputy CM Ajit Pawar said, "Everyone is sad with whatever happened. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj is our diety and everyone is proud of his history...The Chief Minister has held meetings in this regard...Efforts are being made to build the memorial. Action will be taken against the culprits. No matter where they run they will be found..."

Chetan Patil, the structural consultant named in the FIR regarding the collapse of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s statue in Maharashtra's Sindhudurg district, was arrested in Kolhapur on Thursday night. The Kolhapur Superintendent of Police, Mahendra Pandit, confirmed that Patil was taken into custody and handed over to Sindhudurg police for further investigation.
