New Delhi, Sep 27: Harinder Bajwa alias Sunny, who was shot at while giving chase to a rogue Delhi Police head constable who had robbed an elderly businessman of jewellery and shot him dead on Saturday evening in Old Delhi, succumbed to his injuries on Monday evening.
24-year-old Sunny, a mobile repair shop owner in Daryaganj was returning home on his bike when he saw Head Constable Ajay Tomar shooting an old businessman Amarjit Singh Chaddha and fleeing. A policeman stopped Sunny's motorbike and gave chase. Tomar shot at Sunny and the bullet was lodged in his neck.
Sunny was operated upon in the early hours of Sunday for removing the bullet. “We were told that due to the injury, blood supply to his brain has been badly affected,” he added.
Meanwhile, the head constable has been dismissed from service. He was posted in the seventh battalion of the Delhi Police.
“There were no previous complaints of grave nature against him. An enquiry was once conducted against him for alleged fight with a colleague. He was also issued a censure notice for unauthorised absence,” said a police officer, adding that he has been dismissed from service for his alleged involvement in the murder-cum-robbery case.
The incident took place around 8-30 p.m. on Saturday when Ajay intercepted businessman Amarjeet Singh Chadda (60) and his employee Mohit while they were on their way to Rani Bagh. The head constable allegedly asked Chadda to handover his valuables and when he offered resistance, the accused shot him in the stomach and escaped on foot with some jewellery.
A head constable on patrol duty ran after Ajay. Sunny, who was coming from behind, offered a ride to the policeman on his motorcycle to catch the assailant. On reaching Pul Mithai, Ajay allegedly fired at Sunny, injuring him in the neck and then jumped from the bridge in a bid to escape. He fractured his legs and was overpowered.
Two firearms of Chinese make, stolen gold chains and several live cartridges were purportedly seized from him.
Chadda, a resident of Rani Bagh, is survived by his wife and a son and a daughter. He owned a dry fruits shop in Fatehpuri Chowk.
In Sunny's house in Railway Colony Sarai Rohilla, all the family members are in a state of grief. Brother Goldie and Sister Deepika are unable to control their emotions. Delhi Police has offered posthumous reward to Sunny, but his family says, no reward will be able to compensate Sunny's life.
