Guwahati: BJP was a major winner in Assam, bagging seven of the 14 Lok Sabha seats, while Congress managed only three prompting Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi to announce he would resign taking responsibility for the party's debacle in the state.
Principal Opposition party AIUDF won three seats and an Independent one.
When trends started indicating a dismal performance for Congress, Gogoi announced that he would submit his resignation to party president Sonia Gandhi accepting full responsibility.
“Prior to the polls, I had said, I would step down if the party fails to win more than seven seats and Tarun Gogoi is not a man who will go back on his words,” he said.
BJP gained three seats from its 2009 tally of four and lost one, AIUDF gained two from its earlier tally of one while the Congress lost five of its seven seats and gained one while ally Bodoland Peoples' Front (BPF) lost the Kokrajhar seat to an Independent candidate.
