Morena (MP), Mar 11: Acting tough against the mining mafia in the wake of killing of an IPS officer, the police here today arrested BJP's Morena district unit's vice president Hamir Singh for allegedly assaulting mining officers and forcibly taking away two tractor-trolleys engaged in quarrying of stones, police said.
The BJP leader had assaulted Mining Inspector Rajkumar Barethe on January 31 when he along with District Mining Officer Rakesh Kaneria seized two tractor-trolleys engaged in illegal mining of stones.
When the two officials were carrying the seized vehicles, they were intercepted by the BJP leader who later severely thrashed Baethe and forcibly took away the seized tractor-trolleys, sources said.
Barethe had filed a complaint with the police in this regard, but no action was taken till now.
However, in the wake of killing of IPS officer Narendra Kumar Singh, the police decided to act tough and arrested Hamir in connection with the mining officer's complaint, sources said.
A meeting of senior police officials was also held today to review the situation.
The School Education Minister Archana Chitnis who is the in-charge of the district said yesterday that there was a lack of coordination among the Revenue, Police, Forest and Mining departments because of which such incidents took place and had directed them to hold a joint meeting to address the issue.
