Bangalore: Biocon Limited chief and Bangalore Political Action Committee president Kiran Mazumdar Shaw yesterday asked Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to convene a special session of the Legislature to discuss crime against women.

“Convene a special session of the Legislature to discuss crime against women and create seriousness and urgency among the police, judiciary, bureaucracy and society at large,” Shaw said in a letter to Siddaramaiah here.

She called for immediate intervention by Siddaramaiah, Home Minister K J George and Police Commissioner Raghavendra Auradkar in implementing strong and decisive measures to ensure safety of women in the state.

“There are heinous acts committed against women in Bangalore almost every day. The lack of respect for women in our society is appalling... we want to sensitise the government to reform existing laws and bring forward new measures that we believe will help bring down crimes against women,” Shaw said.

BPAC Core Committee Member Revathy Ashok also said in the letter that Bangalore ranks number four in terms of rape cases at 3.8 per cent, with Delhi at the top as per a report published by National Crime Records Bureau.  Bangalore is also at the second position when it comes to crimes against women, she said.
