Bhabanipur Election Result 2021: Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee on Sunday secured a comfortable win in Bhabanipur, beating BJP rival Priyanka Tibrewal by more than 58,000 votes. According to the Election Commission of India, Mamata Banerjee bagged 84,709 votes while Priyanka Tibrewal pocketed 26,320. CPIM leader Srijib Biswas got 4,201 votes. The election was necessitated after state minister Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay, who won the assembly election from Bhabanipur in south Kolkata in May, resigned from the seat to pave the way for Mamata Banerjee. Mamata Banerjee had lost the assembly elections from Nandigram earlier this year. Mamata was required to win in order to get elected to the assembly to retain the CM's chair.

Ruling BJD candidate Rudra Pratap Maharathy on Sunday widened his lead over nearest rival Ashrit Pattanayak of the BJP to 11,196 votes at the end of the eleventh round of counting in the Pipili by-election, the Election Commission said. Maharathy secured 42,774 votes, while Pattanayak bagged 31,578 votes, and Congress nominee Bishwokeshan Harichandan Mohapatra got 2,602 votes. Of the 78,675 votes counted till the end of the eleventh round, 401 people chose the NOTA (none of the above) option, it said.

EC bans all victory celebrations
The Election Commission of India (ECI) has banned all victory celebrations in West Bengal. Counting is currently underway in Bhabanipur, Jangipur and Samserganj of West Bengal. "No victory celebration/procession during/after the counting shall be allowed in the ongoing elections in West Bengal, for which counting is being held on 03.10.2021. All necessary actions must be taken to ensure strict compliance with the Commission's direction wherein all such activities have already been prohibited in view of pandemic. The state government must ensure that adequate steps are taken so that no post-poll violence takes place," the ECI said in a letter to West Bengal Chief Secretary.

Mamata Banerjee is a resident of Bhabanipur and has contested from the seat in the past two state assembly elections since 2011. Banerjee, who led her party to a massive electoral triumph for a third successive term, is required to win a seat in the state assembly by November 5 in conformity with the constitutional provisions to continue as Chief Minister. The Constitution allows a non-member of a state legislature or Parliament to continue in a ministerial position for six months. Banerjee had entered the Assembly after winning the by-poll in the Bhabanipur seat months after her party stormed to power by ousting the 34-year-old Left Front regime in 2011. She is a six-term MP from the South Kolkata Lok Sabha seat, which has the Bhabanipur seat as one of its segments.
