Chandigarh: Gurmit Singh Khalsa, convicted in former Punjab chief minister Beant Singh's assassination, was today released on 28 days parole from Burail jail here.
He was in jail since August 1995 after he was arrested in the case.
His sisters Varinder Kaur and Manjit Kaur, and mother Surjit Kaur were present at the jail, when he came out.
He offered prayers at Gurdwara Amba Sahib in Mohali and met Gurbaksh Singh Khalsa, who had been sitting on indefinite fast since 41 days demanding release of all Sikh convicts who are in jail despite completion of jail terms.
Gurbaksh Singh Khalsa said, it was because of his fast that Lal Singh was released from Nabha jail and now Gurmit Singh has been released.
He said the top 5 granthis of Akal Takht must first give him in writing that all such convicts will be released and he would then call off his fast.
He warned that any individual or organisation collecting money on his behalf in Indian or abroad will not be spared.
