New Delhi, Aug 17: 23,600 Bangladeshi nationals have been deported in the last three years while over 83,400 people from the country, claiming to be refugees, are living in India.

Replying to a question in Lok Sabha, minister of state for external affairs Preneet Kaur said a total of 23,653 Bangladeshi citizens have been deported from 2009 to 2011.

Giving year-wise break up, she said a maximum of 10,602 Bangladeshi nationals were deported in 2009 while the numbers for 2010 and 2011 were 6,290 and 6,761 respectively.

She said that as on December 31, 2011, a total of 67,945 nationals from over 40 countries were found to be overstaying in India who include 13,744 from Afghanistan and 8,037 from Pakistan.

Kaur said a total of 2,168 nationals from the US, 2038 from Iraq and 1,094 people from the UK were also found to be overstaying in India.

Answering a separate question, she said a total of 83,484 Bangladesh nationals have been living in India, claiming to be refugees.

Asked whether these people were given Adhaar numbers, Kaur did not give a direct reply but said Unique Identification Authority of India has been mandated to generate and issue a 12 digit unique identification number to all residents of India.

"Adhaar is not a citizen identity card. It does not confer citizenship nor does it, by itself, confer right of citizenship," she said.
