Bangalore: Bengaluru International Airport will be renamed Kempe Gowda International Airport from December 15.


Kempe Gowda was a  ruler  during the Vijayanagara Empire. He is considered to be the founder of Bangalore.

Along with the renaming of the airport,  Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL )will officially open the doors of a brand new Terminal 1A too.

The new, expanded terminal spans over 150,500sq m – doubling the previous floor area – which will allow the airport to accommodate increased airport passenger traffic.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Civil Aviation Minister Ajit Singh will preside over the function. .

From now on, all international airlines leave alone the local airlines will have to officially book the tickets in the new name — Kempe Gowda International Airport.

As of date, the computer software of airline operators for booking tickets is yet to be updated and this is expected to be executed over the next fortnight.
