New Delhi: Yoga guru BKS Iyengar, founder of the 'Iyengar Yoga' passed away at a private hospital in Pune on Wednesday.


The 96-year-old yoga exponent was admitted to the intensive care unit in Pune for poor heart function and difficulty in breathing and his funeral ceremonies will be performed here Wednesday.

He breathed his last around 3.15 a.m. local time after a brief battle with age-related ailments.

Iyengar was diagnosed with heart pumping failure and had suffered two heart attacks in 1998 and 2000.

BKS Iyengar was amongst India's best known Yoga Guru and considered to be the father of modern yoga.

He was awarded the Padma Shri in 1991, the Padma Bhushan in 2002 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2014.

Iyengar was also named one of the 100 most influential people in the world by Time Magazine in 2004.

BKS Iyengar has authored several books on Yoga, its practice and techniques.
