The outrage over the suicide of an assistant professor Balwinder Kaur in Ropar, Punjab intensified in the state after the deceased's family and the Akali Dal staged protests against the state Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains. As protests stepped up, the state police on Tuesday added the minister's name to the DDR (Daily Diary Report).

According to deceased's kin, the assistant professor was facing a lot of trouble due to not being allotted the station after her appointment in 2021 which prompted her to take the extreme move.

Minister's name appeared in suicide note

A suicide note was recovered from the deceased in which she had reportedly named the Education Minister's attitude as one of the causes of her suicide. She received the appointment letter on December 3, 2021 yet the joining letter was not issued due to which she was mentally disturbed. She was an assistant professor of Political Science.

Kaur staged protest before suicide

Notably, Kaur along with her colleagues was sitting on a dharna near the village of the education minister, Gambhirpur but to no avail. With no response from the government, she reportedly got fed up and committed suicide by jumping into the Sirhind Canal.

Bains named in DDR following protests

The police had earlier registered a case against Kaur's in-laws and husband for harassing and inciting suicide in this case. But, after the family members staged protests and the opposition parties threw their weight, the police changed the angle of the probe and named the minister in the DDR.
